Really new at IRC reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brakden · 2016-08-31 15:43 What is the best place to learn how to code IRC? I watched some videos but any recommendations? Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jumpking · 2016-08-31 16:42 Code IRC? You'll need to be more specific. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- forlornborg · 2016-08-31 17:33 Do you want to use IRC for a coding project or?? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brakden · 2016-08-31 17:37 So to be more specific, I want to be able to take chat input and put it into a database that has the variables both of user and time. Then output information to a txt file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brakden · 2016-08-31 17:37 So to be more specific, I want to be able to take chat input and put it into a database that has the variables both of user and time. Then output information to a txt file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cobra_Fast · 2016-08-31 17:41 While that's still far from *specific*, there are ready to use libraries for IRC for all popular languages (e.g. C#, Java, PHP) as well as libraries for databases (e.g. SQLite) that should get your started easily. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jumpking · 2016-08-31 17:52 What /u/Cobra_Fast said. So, it sounds like you want to write an IRC bot. You'll need to know a programming language and then either use an IRC library for that language if one exists, or work with the IRC protocol yourself. You can also find a pre-existing IRC bot that allows for writing plugins and write what you want using that bot's system. To expand a bit on some language choices that /u/Cobra_Fast mentioned (C#, Java, PHP) you might also try Python, Lua, Node.js, Ruby, or C++. I'm not sure what sort of familiarity you have with programming languages, but if you're already familiar with or are learning one, you should probably try that one first. To see if a language has a pre-written IRC library, try searching for the name of the language and "IRC library" on Google. To look for pre-existing IRC bots, just search for that on Google too. "List of IRC bot software", for example, should work just fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AltReality · 2016-08-31 18:43 I'll also throw out there...if you're on Windows, mIRC is a decent client with a well-matured scripting language and a forum with scripting help that goes years back. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brakden · 2016-08-31 20:41 Yep I'm using mirc right now to learn how this works. Like I said super new. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brakden · 2016-08-31 20:43 Oh! That was probably the hang up. I thought MIRC was how IRC works in all instances. My bad. Like I said really new. So mirc is what I would like to learn how to code not Irc. As a side point I know a decent but of Python and am trying to learn more. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AltReality · 2016-08-31 20:52 So if you are using mIRC, I would recommend you go throught he scripting tutorials on the forum and in the help file. They should at least get you started in the right direction. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jumpking · 2016-08-31 20:53 Aha. mIRC is just an IRC client that connects to an IRC server. There are many different IRC clients. So, you want an mIRC script, then. Can you provide an example of how it would work, specifically? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brakden · 2016-09-01 04:40 Yes. Thanks for following me. Sorry for the confusion The purpose of the script is know the most common input into the chat over the last n seconds and to then output that information in some capacity. 1. User input into chat 2. Mirc collects their input and archives it with a time stamp. 3 mirc looks for exactly similar inputs and determines which has the most. 4 Mirc would output this information (maybe to text) 5 Mirc would then Index and delete any input n seconds old 6 would sleep and wait for next input. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zanacross · 2016-09-01 05:13 if you know some python already mIRC Script should be really easy. mIRC comes with a help file that can be accessed by typing "/help ", eg. "/help on text". That will be the first part of the script you'll need. The help file can provide a lot of information and it's fairly easy to read. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ps4star · 2016-09-01 21:17 I don't understand. Why do you need a database if you want to output the information to a text file? If you want the time, you can just append the current time to the message. Python has support for IRC, time, and writing to files so I'd recommend it for this task. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brakden · 2016-09-01 21:54 Ah because we are going to be really dynamic with the information. I will copy and paste from my comment above. The purpose of the script is know the most common input into the chat over the last n seconds and to then output that information in some capacity. 1 User input into chat 2Mirc collects their input and archives it with a time stamp. 3 mirc looks for exactly similar inputs and determines which has the most. 4 Mirc would output this information (maybe to text) 5 Mirc would then Index and delete any input n seconds old 6 would sleep and wait for next input. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brakden · 2016-09-01 21:55 great! I will check that out tonight. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- notoriousOIT · 2016-12-06 08:25 Reading your comments below: learn Python and have your client log to text file. You can process the text files and write to a db table if you wish. However I'd recommend skipping the DB together if you want to output to text. PM if you have questions.
