If ssl is used, does it encrypt /dcc file transfers in IRC? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- P-e-t-a-r · 2016-06-28 22:59 I am looking to setup self-signed certificate and keys in order to use SSL for my IRC (do not have public IP, behind NAT/Firewall, using IRC as Tor hidden service to access it over internet). So as title says, I need to add encryption to protect file transfers, and want to make sure SSL will help me do that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CannedDeath · 2016-06-29 00:40 It does not. The DCC commands themselves will be encrypted but the peer-to-peer connection established for DCC CHAT or SEND will be in plaintext. Some clients might support SSL with DCC but it's not standard and none of the clients I'm familiar with support it. DCC is also pretty crappy in general, and it's very annoying to get working with NAT, proxies, and Tor. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- P-e-t-a-r · 2016-06-29 07:59 Are there some other solutions for 1->1 file transfers on IRC? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CannedDeath · 2016-06-29 08:16 Not really. Most people I know just use Google Drive links. And, really, I've had maybe 2 occasions in 9 years of using IRC where I would have found a file transfer useful. I'm also not sure if anyone is planning a successor to DCC like the IRCv3 committee is working on a successor to the IRC RFCs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- P-e-t-a-r · 2016-06-29 08:22 Thanks. Very useful. I will think of another way of securely file transfers while on some open-source group chats. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- P-e-t-a-r · 2016-06-29 08:31 One more question: Would stunnel help? https://encrypted.google.com/#newwindow=1&q=stunnel%20irc I guess No. but have to ask. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CannedDeath · 2016-06-29 08:36 It would be very annoying to get working since your DCC request would need to have the receiver's stunnel port and address and their response would need to have your stunnel port and address, and you'd also need to set up the two stunnels to talk to each other, which is annoying to do more than once if you have dynamic IPs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- P-e-t-a-r · 2016-06-29 08:55 Thanks again. I ran out of options. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pereba · 2016-06-29 14:14 As stated before, some clients has support for SSEND, like KvIRC, AdiIRC, mIRC though a script/dll helper and more, but the usage is quite boring. An easy alternative is to use softwares based on Direct Connect protocol, they are popular in some niches. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_Connect_(protocol)
