IRC-does it still exist?! reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ezoterka · 2016-06-18 02:22 Seriously, sorry for dumb question, but is there any IRC happening still? Like a place where u can still potentially find a good conversation? I feel out-dated.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bloodygonzo · 2016-06-18 02:27 Absolutely, there are tons of very active channels on Snoonet, many of them are directly connected to your favorite subreddits. If you want a good place to start chatting, just click [here.](https://webchat.snoonet.org/casualconversation) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meeb · 2016-06-18 03:11 In addition to snoonet (the IRC network orientated towards reddit), the 'big 5' networks still have hundreds of thousands of users in total on them: * Freenode (software and development orientated) * QuakeNet (gaming orientated) * IRCNet (general) * EFNet (general) * UnderNet (general) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- swtsplin · 2016-06-18 03:30 And, ofc, Twitch.tv chat server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- j4jackj · 2016-06-18 04:23 Of course it does. Freenode. Snoonet as many mention. Rizon if you're a weeb. Anthrochat if you're a furry (recently took short hiatus there). Furnet same purpose. Sorcerynet if you're a roleplayer or a gay person, though it's amenable to general chat. I'm sure /u/anonman9 will chime in with some ronsorirc bullshit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- j4jackj · 2016-06-18 04:23 Have my upgoat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- phyzome · 2016-06-18 05:06 I'd stay away from EFNet though. The ircops are extraordinarily rude and childish. Don't waste your time and energy there. I'd also mention foonetic (a small network, mostly XKCD related channels) and OFTC (larger, similar to freenode). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2016-06-18 06:01 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- blueskin · 2016-06-18 06:46 Freenode or Rizon, plus there are still plenty of smaller networks around. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2016-06-18 07:04 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kaelidoz · 2016-06-18 11:48 Ho and don't forget the sweet warez. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meeb · 2016-06-18 11:56 QuakeNet's v6 server has been rock solid stable :P ... and Q is awesome :) ... and SSL over IRC is a security nightmare... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- not_perfect_yet · 2016-06-18 18:31 Freenode is my first resource to go to when I have questions that need answers fast. With programming languages and many open source programs you'll get your answer very fast, way faster than if you ask in forums or stackoverflow. Also linux. Big linux channels. I also visited a very friendly channel about biking, but I think that was the /r/cycling subreddit. So yeah. It's alive alright. I don't see any challengers in terms of easy of use either. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nicd · 2016-06-18 21:37 Qnet's IPv6 server has been stable lately, but has had some problems earlier (in the last couple of years). TLS on IRC would be useful to protect authentication credentials. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pm_me_mean_things · 2016-06-18 22:15 Rizon's my favorite network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- illonlyusethisonceok · 2016-06-18 22:17 RonsorIRC still exists? I thought that cancerous shit would've died by now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- j4jackj · 2016-06-18 22:43 *shrug* I don't know Maybe Ronsor's given up How was it cancerous anyway? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- j4jackj · 2016-06-18 22:44 re: ef, agreed! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- j4jackj · 2016-06-18 22:46 I hate 3 of those networks. Undernet: No IPv6. Quakenet: I'm persona non grata EFnet: Shitty network - you get ddosed if you're not a criminal IRCnet is actually very good lately! It has no services though, so watch out for that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meeb · 2016-06-19 00:23 Q supports CHALLENGEAUTH to protect credentials and has done for a decade. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- disflux · 2016-06-19 02:19 Nope. It's gone. All of it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Saber_UK · 2016-06-19 03:01 > SSL over IRC is a security nightmare No it is not. What is a security nightmare is sending your passwords to the server over a plaintext connection. Do you want to get pwned? Because thats how you get pwned. IRCv3 is also moving in the direction of deprecating plaintext and mandating encryption. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meeb · 2016-06-19 04:21 Authentication details sent securely is not the same as general SSL for IRC. I am not against SSL for IRC in general, it's just not the panacea for security for distributed IRC networks. It's only recently with the advent of things like letsencrypt that it really is at all possible. There are a number of serious issues that IRC over SSL creates, ignoring entirely the implicit trust and privacy issues which is another (and complicated) discussion. IRCv3 is making decent strides but it's not there yet, nor is the standard (when completed) likely to be implemented any time soon by any large network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- illonlyusethisonceok · 2016-06-19 04:58 It was pretty cancerous. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nicd · 2016-06-19 06:37 Challengeauth, yes, which apparently still requires that you store passwords as plaintext. I'm not seeing the upside in that solution. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- j4jackj · 2016-06-19 07:10 BUT HOW ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meeb · 2016-06-19 07:11 They protect the details over the wire... which was your original issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nicd · 2016-06-19 07:23 When talking about credentials, on the wire is only one of my concerns. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonman9 · 2016-06-20 13:29 I no longer use irc so ronsorirc is dead ---------------------------------------------------------------------- j4jackj · 2016-06-20 18:21 thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HidingBehindAmonitor · 2016-06-24 11:38 I did wonder where it went, #bringbackronsor ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SJ-Diamond · 2016-06-26 15:34 Also no longer in another irc servers? Too bad :( Any other place to talk to you again fro a bit perhaps? In your server i was known as SaphirJD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonman9 · 2016-06-27 12:37 well i am in irc.freenode.net #tcl sometimes, I also use tox: http://tox.chat ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SJ-Diamond · 2016-06-27 18:56 Ok :D I send you my ToxID over PM here :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2016-07-01 05:23 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MC_Cuff_Lnx · 2016-07-01 05:26 > Quakenet: I'm persona non grata Story time?! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zer0t3ch · 2016-07-01 09:14 Definitely. /u/j4jackj, what happened? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- j4jackj · 2016-07-01 20:06 I very mildly pissed off an oper, who then provoked me. Escalation ensued.
