HexChat update 2.12.0 just deleted all my settings and logs... reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Slaynie · 2016-04-22 15:04 ~~Time to look for a new client. Yes, I'm just ranting.~~ edit: Looks like I'm just stupid and had enabled portable mode. Thanks /u/TingPing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- blueskin · 2016-04-22 15:38 Backups, people. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2016-04-22 18:11 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TingPing · 2016-04-22 22:38 I'm sure its too late for you to care. But to clarify HexChat's installer doesn't touch configs (why would it) and it makes no logical sense for HexChat to ever delete a file while running. So while I don't doubt you lost files I think it is a more complex issue than "hexchat deleted my logs"... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joedonut · 2016-04-23 01:22 Hmm. Never saw such behaviour. What OS? Where did the update come from? How did you perform the update? Finally, did you manually look for the configuration and logged data? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Slaynie · 2016-04-23 05:32 Config files are in AppData/Roaming. Not sure what happened right after the update, but after I run the application after install (with the option on last installer screen), my settings were gone. I thought OK, maybe they changed something in settings, so I just manually connected (Nickname was still there, does it take it from windows? I have the same account name in windows). Then I noticed I didn't have any logs, so I checked C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Hexchat\ and all the files there were new (logs from different channels, which I haven't connected to, were missing as well) Just to be sure, I searched the whole C drive for HexChat, but nothing else came up. Using Windows 10 pro x64, Hexchat is installed in D:\Program Files\ , installer was downloaded from the prompt inside application. The one thing I noticed was that after opening the installer, it wanted to install to C:\, so I changed it to D:\. It has warned me that the folder already exists, but I still clicked continue (some programs do this with every update). This wasn't the first update I have used while using Hexchat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Slaynie · 2016-04-23 05:34 Don't want to copy/paste it again, so if you want to know the answer to your questions, look in the thread, I have written is as a response to developer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TingPing · 2016-04-23 10:35 Sure you were not running portable-mode previously? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Slaynie · 2016-04-23 11:32 Now I feel really stupid. Found the config files in installation directory. Now the weird thing is that I don't put portable programs in "Program files". And I'm pretty damn sure I had HexChat listed among installed programs in "Uninstall or change a program". Is it possible to activate portable mode after installation? Or did the old installer also create an uninstall entry even in portable mode? Not sure how this happened, but thanks, gonna edit OP post, should I also delete this thread? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TingPing · 2016-04-23 11:43 > Is it possible to activate portable mode after installation? Well not on accident, a file existing named `portable-mode` will toggle it. > Or did the old installer also create an uninstall entry even in portable mode? It should not. Anyway glad it was sorted out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iandrewc · 2016-05-26 13:59 Thank you, fixed my problem as well.
