How do you disable all IRC connections? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2016-03-29 03:21 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AltReality · 2016-03-29 03:57 it would be pretty tough because there is a variety of IRC clients out there. I assume you are using Windows...so you can block port 6667 in the Windows firewall, but most servers accept connections on different ports. Secondly you can block the individual IRC application that is used, but again there are many IRC clients out there that would need to be accounted for. Lastly however there are web-based IRC portals out there all over the place. mibbit.com is one of the most popular ones but there are others. These would have to have the whole web blocked in order to prevent their use...which wouldn't be practical. My advice, one parent to another, is to be involved with what your kid is doing...teach them to have values and morals and then randomly check in on them to make sure they are living up to the standard you set for them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LordGarak · 2016-03-29 09:17 Trying to block IRC is just going to make the kid want to get on IRC. Just leave it and they will likely never wander onto IRC. These days IRC is mostly full of programmers and IT people. Its a great place for kids to go and learn. The scum of the internet have moved on to easier and more popular systems like facebook and snap chat or what ever the kids do these days. If anything take them on a network like freenode and show they how boring it is. They will never want to use IRC again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ahrotahntee_ · 2016-03-29 11:58 > If anything take them on a network like freenode and show they how boring it is You mean we're not cool anymore? :( ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Monkespank · 2016-03-29 17:50 I wish every parent could read that last paragraph. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2016-03-30 02:11 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ctcp · 2016-03-30 13:05 If you just want to prevent your kid from downloading through xdcc, you could set a general traffic limit for the irc application that you're using or for the entire computer. Preventing from connecting to an IRC server will be impossible unless you block all access to the internet. You could block the most common IRC ports (6667-7000). But not all servers use these ports. And it won't prevent your kid from using an ordinary browser and connecting via a webchat relay.
