Is there something special I have to do to see people post on HexChat?

So I recently downloaded and have been playing with HexChat. Without
exception pretty much every single room I wander into *no one* is
talking or else I can't see when they are. Is this a settings problem?
I didn't see any notifications in the freenode room that anything had
failed or didn't set up.

It isn't just one room it's on virtually everything I go into, even
ones I'd expect to have *some* activity on like #linux

Nah, it's just the way of IRC. Most people leave the clients on 24/7,
so room numbers are inflated. If you hang around, you will see
chatter. Hang in there!
