IRC is a much simpler lighter protocol

XMPP has status identfiars.

These are two completely different protocols that server completely

are best suited for each protocol?

Irc is for Irc servers. It's best at facilitating an IRC server.

XMPP is a generic chat protocol that supports some features but not a
whole lot. Google Talk used to run on this. It's more used in a place
where you don't need as much config or control, such as a workplace.
