By which criteria do I select a network for a new channel? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chicacherrycolalime · 2015-10-03 18:40 I'm tasked to set up a new channel for a subreddit. Is there something I can or should pay attention to when I choose a network? So far I would default to Rizon, only because it's the only one I know. My very short time on snoonet indicates it's very similar from the user perspective, so how much does it even matter? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyleyankan · 2015-10-03 22:30 Depends on your audience. I dont join a new network unless theres a few channels I want to be in. I won't join just for one new channel. Where's your IRC userbase coming from? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chicacherrycolalime · 2015-10-03 22:34 Mostly the sidebar in the sub. It's not a technical place, so a link to Kiwiirc.com will do (did fine in the past). The people who drop by usually change to Hexchat et al pretty fast after that. So far I just joined whatever network I found an interesting channel on, it's (for me) not a big deal to put it into a new server tab. But then again I don't frequent many channels at all so I'm far from representative. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MachaHack · 2015-10-04 13:17 1. Technical features: Some networks don't believe in NickServ et al, are you OK with not having the possibility for users to claim a personal identity? Does the network allow mibbit etc? It makes it easier for users to join but provides an extra mod headache. 2. Where are your users? If you're doing a channel for an open source project, Freenode is 98% of the time, the correct place to be as other open source projects are there and users of them are too. Reddit channels should be on Freenode or Snoonet so users have one less network to manage. Some gaming channels are on Espernet etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- goldman60 · 2015-10-04 22:16 Snoonet is a fan favorite for reddit IRCs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anti_body · 2015-10-13 15:16 depends on what you want. some servers off services others don't from for privacy, nick protection, channel services etc. whilst others do not. you can choose your network depending on if your members require such services. also, how will your audience be connecting to irc? espernet for example has a script on their page that you can link to that allows users to connect from their browsers whereas other networks might require the knowledge of connecting through a client
