What IRC network is most popular? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- blackicehawk · 2015-09-17 15:52 I used IRC back in the late 90's but haven't since. So I'm out of the loop. I can't remember the network I always connected to back then and many new ones have popped up since. So what are the most popular IRC networks to connect to? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MillenniumFalc0n · 2015-09-17 16:33 The largest network by a significant margin is freenode, but you should connect to a network based on what you're looking for. Freenode for open source projects, snoonet for reddit-based channels, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NeuroG · 2015-09-17 17:14 Besides Freenode, there are a bunch of busy ones (http://irc.netsplit.de/networks/top100.php). In actual practice, it's a matter of finding interesting channels, and just connecting to whatever network is required for them. Some small networks, like snoonet (sidebar) have very busy channels, and some big networks have reems of dead channels. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Barry_Scotts_Cat · 2015-09-17 20:16 Active? Free node Largest number of clients? Mostly bots. Under net or EFNet ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adampskib · 2015-09-17 22:10 How do you know what servers are usually for what? Is there a website somewhere listing this, or are you talking from experience? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2015-09-17 23:50 UnderNet and EfNet are nothing like they used to be since things like ICQ, chat messenger programs (MSN, AIM, etc) and then Facebook came about. No more non-geeks. Freenode is the only network I use these days, for tech stuff of course. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Princess_Pwny · 2015-09-18 03:00 That's not exactly right, Twitch chat is the largest IRC network technically speaking. Most people don't know it's running IRC, it breaks IRC spec in many ways and most users are using webchat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MillenniumFalc0n · 2015-09-18 03:01 Some of it is experience but most networks will say what audience they cater to on their websites. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LocutusOfBorges · 2015-09-18 03:44 It's not as globally popular as EFNet and Freenode, by any stretch - but Snoonet (reddit's unofficial network) is excellent. Well worth giving a try. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sugrb · 2015-09-18 05:42 long live EFNet! I don't frequent it anymore, but it sure was fun in the mid to late 90's ---------------------------------------------------------------------- roaawr · 2015-09-18 08:18 It's an abomination, not IRC :p ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Princess_Pwny · 2015-09-18 18:19 Well yeah that too. I still like how they decided to implement private messages for twitch chat (which is basically just like normal irc PM's) in the most convoluted way humanly possible. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- coldf2 · 2015-09-20 14:52 Abjects have a few channels that are pretty active. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jackpaxx · 2016-02-14 21:54 Quite late on the comment, I apologize! I don't know how it is now, but back when Twitch was JTV, you were actually able to connect to their network and go to the chatrooms on that.
