General IRC questions reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cookieslapper · 2015-07-18 18:58 1. How easy is it to host/make an irc server and/or channel? 2. What language is used to make irc bots? (and if you could link me in the right direction, that would be fantastic. 3. what are the best irc clients for android and linux??? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sketchni · 2015-07-18 19:05 You can make a channel on virtually any network provided they allow it (read their MOTD and rules!) If you want to set up your own IRC server, you'll need to get yourself a server. I'd recommend a VPS over a shell because you have more freedom and all your resources to yourself. Most beginners start out with [UnrealIRCd](https://unrealircd.org) and [Anope Services](http://anope.org) to provide nickname and channel management. [InspIRCd](http://inspircd.org) is also faily popular with beginners these days and is generally partnered with [Atheme Services](http://atheme.net/atheme.html) although its discontinued now. For IRC bots, you can use almost any language you wish. I've made bots in php and python. But you could use C, C++, Java, Scala, Ruby, Visual Basic etc. Again, beginners usually go with Eggdrop which is simple to get running and binds with TCL so you can write custom scripts. I'm not too sure about IRC clients for android, but for linux `Hexchat` is best and actually comes with certain distros. If you prefer the retro feel, something like `irssi` would be nice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wub_wub · 2015-07-18 21:47 >How easy is it to host/make an irc server Somewhat easy if you are familiar with editing config files, running services, etc, ideally on a linux environment. >and/or channel? Making a channel on an existing server can usually be done by any registered user. Check out the website of the irc server you want your channel to be on, I'm sure they have more info on what kind of channels are allowed and who can create them. >What language is used to make irc bots? Pretty much any language can be used to write bots, google for "[language you're interested in] irc bot" and I'm sure you'll get something. >what are the best irc clients for android and linux??? Some have more features than others, but in the end it mostly boils down to personal preference. I used hexchat (GUI) and weechat(command line based) on linux and both are good. Not sure about android irc apss, sorry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2015-07-18 21:48 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- laske2 · 2015-07-19 00:45 I haven't used it but [polari](http://worldofgnome.org/uploads/2013/10/polari-main.png) looks very nice. Hexchat is what i currently use and it's great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2015-07-19 16:30 Making your server is as easy as "apt-get install ngircd" and channels are "/join #channel" on any server. Bots can me made from any language. Bash, Python, Perl. My favorite bot is "eggdrop". Clients: irssi and xchat for linux. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nupogodi · 2015-07-19 22:01 The best client is weechat. Xchat/hexchat/whatever forks are good if you want a GUI client, but you can't run it in screen, so what's the point! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 24cal · 2015-11-12 10:38 irssi... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nupogodi · 2015-11-12 10:40 weechat is irssi on steroids
