Quassel (core+clients) vs. IRCCloud vs. ZNC reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- accents · 2015-07-06 12:05 Howdy all - I've been using Quassel and have been liking it, but don't like the lack of mobile clients. I'm thinking of ZNC + Palaver for iOS and Textual for OS X and mIRC for Windows and irssi for nix machines. However, I just heard about IRCCloud. What do people use and what made you decide to use one thing over another? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Crendgrim · 2015-07-06 14:01 For Android there is [Quasseldroid](https://f- droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=com.iskrembilen.quasseldroid), which I am using. For iOS there apparently is [iQuassel](https://itunes.apple.com/app/iquassel/id566844252), though I don't know how polished that is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- accents · 2015-07-06 14:05 How do you like Quasseldroid? I may be moving over to Google Fi soon and may start getting into the Android ecosystem because of that. A friend of mine tried iQuassel (and is in a similar boat as I am) and didn't like it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Crendgrim · 2015-07-06 14:11 I'm using it on SailfishOS via the Android VM, and the only problems I have are that it doesn't adapt to Sailfish usage guidelines, but (of course) to Android ones. So, as an Android app, I'm really happy with it. It seems slower to connect / receive the current status than my desktop Quassel, but apart from the initial connect I find it to be very responsive, fast and easy-to-use. The one thing I'm missing (though it may be possible by editing some files) is to modify the colours active/unread/... channels get; it is different from what I'm used to on PC and that can be slightly confusing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TingPing · 2015-07-06 15:24 I much prefer a normal bouncer that doesn't lock you into specific clients. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- discopig · 2015-07-06 17:07 IRCCloud's costs are ridiculously and laughably high. You can buy a vps for $10-15/year and set up znc on it and it still won't cost you nearly as much as irccloud ($5 * 12 per year, $60), while allowing you to pretty much do anything you want (znc, website hosting, having an useful shell, etc). I can give you decent cheap VPS suggestions if it interests you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- liquoranwhores · 2015-07-06 17:35 I also use a mixture of Quassel and Hexchat. I really wish you could use a regular client with Quassel Core. I think it's something that really holds back adoption since the desktop client kinda sucks. I use Quassel on phones, tablets and mobile PCs. I love the fact that I can spin up a client and easily to deploy whatever but at home on my main desktop, I use Hexchat + ZNC. It's worlds better than the Quassel client. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- accents · 2015-07-06 19:45 So having machines is not a concern (I have access to too many). What you pay for when you use IRCCloud is a polished mobile app(s) and maintenance, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- accents · 2015-07-06 19:46 That's very reasonable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- accents · 2015-07-06 19:47 Hrm. Do you have multiple nicks? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- discopig · 2015-07-06 21:52 Then set up znc, and use a free mobile irc client to automatically connect to it? I don't understand why mobile irc clients would be considered 'unpolished'. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- accents · 2015-07-06 21:57 That's correct. It does take the hassle out of dealing with configuring znc for sure though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- liquoranwhores · 2015-07-06 22:18 I use a different nick & hostname on every network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- prawnsalad · 2015-07-07 00:09 use the webadmin for ZNC. Configuring it is just filling in a few boxes on a webpage and clicking save. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonuz · 2015-07-10 15:28 You could use weechat if you are willing to be using CLI, it has relay protocol so it has pretty good android client. You would need to run it on VPS but I guess it would not be problem? Pro is that you could use main client via ssh from everywhere so there would be not hassle with logs and so on. http://weechat.org/ https://github.com/ubergeek42/weechat-android ---------------------------------------------------------------------- accents · 2015-07-10 15:40 So I've used glowing-bear as a client before and actually was quite happy with how well it worked. Is there no iOS client? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonuz · 2015-07-10 16:10 Seems like there isnt any native apps, you could use that glowing bear tho. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theholyduck · 2015-07-10 21:05 i used to run my own znc and use a mobile irc client, the problem is, they are all awful, and don't do stuff like push notifications. so they drain your battery fast. ircclouds client does, also, unlike every mobile irc client ive tried, it has been pretty painless to use. admittedly, their prices are pretty absurd, but in terms of usability, features and polish. its the best ive been able to find for multiple oses and my phone to all irc on the same session ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DefunctKernel · 2015-07-12 02:47 IRCCloud offers persistance across all devices as it's in the cloud. It depends on what you want really. Running ZNC on a VPS and connecting with local clients is perfectly fine. With IRCCloud you're paying for ease of use. If you're happy to put more effort in then a bouncer is fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- accents · 2015-07-12 07:25 Yeah (although its in where!? the butt?) I really don't like ZNC's lack of intuitive UI... but it looks like there's nothing else. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DefunctKernel · 2015-07-12 13:25 What's wrong with the webadmin panel? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- redwall_hp · 2015-07-15 02:56 >I'm thinking of ZNC + Palaver for iOS and Textual for OS X and mIRC for Windows and irssi for nix machines. That's close to my setup. I have ZNC, with Palaver on iOS and Textual on OS X. (And I'd use WeeChat, which is basically a newer alternative to irssi for non-OSX *nix boxes if I had any.) I'm also using the ZNC module for Palaver push notifications and the clientbuffer module so a buffer is sent to each client once, instead of being immediately cleared when one client requests it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ShaBren · 2015-07-17 21:17 I know I'm a bit late for this, but take a look at zncstrap - it's an overhaul of the web UI.
