Do you think IRC can be a viable replacement for reddit? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Rabble_Rouser · 2015-07-06 00:04 Like many people I'm unhappy with the direction reddit as a site is going. I've been using IRC in some capacity for about five years, but always as something I'd occasionally log onto when I wanted to talk to a particular person or community. Recently I've been really considering branching out into IRC further and using it as a primary content source of sorts. It's something I've wanted to do for a while - primarily because I like the simplicity and 'techyness' of IRC - but given that I don't have a lot of experience using IRC full time I wanted to see if anyone here had advice for me on the matter. I have two main questions; first, has anyone here got advice for someone who's aiming to use IRC a lot in the near future? Second, what client would you guys recommend for something like this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RamenJunkie · 2015-07-06 00:11 The reddit model is was closer to Usenet. That said, a lot of people are going to V o a t. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seiyria · 2015-07-06 00:16 IRC is definitely not a good alternative. It's not easily searchable, there are no permanent links to things, etc. You could possibly build a service to make it work like reddit but it's just not going to work like that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Rabble_Rouser · 2015-07-06 00:21 Obviously they're not totally similar, but I think they're close enough to work. I have no real interest on jumping ship to a reddit clone without the niche subreddits that keep me here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MRiddickW · 2015-07-06 00:40 Agreed. IRC can be a good extension of Reddit (or vise-versa), but IRC is only useful if you need a response *right now*. Getting useful answers to questions would be even more time-dependent than it already is on Reddit. Trying to search would probably be a nightmare. That being said, searchable IRC logs is something that I'd like to see in general. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- farded · 2015-07-06 00:52 I havn't even been able to get to the home site. Always the "heavy load" error. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seiyria · 2015-07-06 01:15 Slack is pretty good at that, but it's a bit different from IRC. Some services allow you to have searchable logs though (botbot.me, I think it's called, and probably others). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RamenJunkie · 2015-07-06 02:39 Go start those niche voats. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2015-07-06 05:23 I have always loved IRC because it is an open protocol, supports encryption, and there are many ways to script and extend its functionality. i've been using it for 15 years ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2015-07-06 10:09 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- alchzh · 2015-07-08 00:11 Get a bouncer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2015-07-08 08:22 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DStoo · 2015-07-20 07:02 Different mediums for different methods of communication. "Live" threads would be awesome, like the good ole days. They'd be almost ideal for an AMA. "Join #AMA." You could make it +m and give ~~Victoria~~ mods +v. You could have AMA discussion in #ama- discussion and another #ama-questions where mods read and moderated questions. Live sports and TV threads would be equally as cool. Any time people try to use IRC as a chat, IRC would be a good replacement. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DStoo · 2015-07-20 07:04 IRC + Usenet + Moderation with shared user/login. It'd be perfect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RamenJunkie · 2015-07-20 13:53 Meh, honestly, aside from spam fighting, I prefer my internet with minimal moderation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DStoo · 2015-07-20 13:56 Depends on what type of discussion you want to foster. I much prefer Slashdot's [meta]moderation since it adds taxonomy. And if you want 'minimal moderation' there are the chan boards.
