How come web client works, but desktop client doesn't?

I've been trying to access irc.undernet.org on channel ebooks. If I
use a web client I can see people talking and issuing commands. If I
use a desktop client (tried: HexChat, mIRC, HydraIRC, and a couple
others) all I get is silence. I cannot issue commands and I can't use
DCC on web client, soo yeah. :(

Have you tried adding an exception to the firewall for the IRC client?

Some IRC servers required you to run an identd server, which your irc
client usually handles but may have trouble with firewalls.

HexChat does bundle an identd server on Windows but the best option is
to just use a server without that silly requirement.
