IP Address Privacy Using IRC reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ThePiGuy2 · 2015-06-26 02:54 So I'm just learning about IRC, and have a few questions. If I connect to a server and sign in using NickServ, can other people see my computer's username and IP address? On my screen it says `[~@]`, and I just want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong. Can other people see that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MillenniumFalc0n · 2015-06-26 02:58 It depends on the network you're connecting to. For example, freenode displays your unmasked ip by default, even if you're registered, and you need to ask for a cloak to hide it. Snoonet masks your ip by default and completely conceals it with a vhost if you register. When you whois yourself you will usually always see your own unmasked host though, in addition to a vhost if you have one ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fps81 · 2015-06-26 03:11 Typically, yes. Some servers provide a way to mask your hostname, but most don't. However, it shouldn't really matter for security. Your computer should be behind a firewall, and it should not be vulnerable to attacks over the internet. If you have a router of any sort, you're probably fine, and if your router has a known vulnerability it's probably already hacked and it doesn't matter if you go on irc or not. If it's a problem for you for privacy reasons, many irc networks are accessible via tor, and vpn services are cheap. I personally have a server on linode that I use to route my irc sessions through and so when I go on irc my hostname is my personal domain name instead of my home IP address. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aedriolo · 2015-06-26 09:37 if you want to be save you could access the ircnetwork via VPN or Proxy. Or you setup a bnc for yourself, like [znc](http://wiki.znc.in/ZNC). There are some [providers](http://wiki.znc.in/Providers) for that too... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ThePiGuy2 · 2015-06-26 14:38 Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rmarmorstein · 2015-06-28 14:34 Most networks will have some form of vHost system. However, you could implement a bouncer and create a hostname for that - for example, my bouncer shows irc.riveris.sexy when I connect to a server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- j4jackj · 2015-11-02 21:12 ._.
