Problems connecting to IRC with Textual at work? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Earlaway · 2015-06-25 11:42 I'm having problems connecting to IRC Through textual at work. It goes fine using a webclient, but web clients are obviously quite a bit worse than having an actual IRC client like Textual. At first I thought it was just that the specific ports for freenode were blocked so I tried to set up an irc bouncer, but it seems the problem goes further then that, when I check my ports they all appear blocked. Like port 80 shows up as blocked even though web browsing works fine. So my question is if there is some work around to let me use Textual instead of having to rely on the irc webClients? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ne7split · 2015-06-25 18:40 The chances are you're using a proxy to connect to the internet at work. This means that in the browser, the proxy is active and you are signed into it, but it needs configuring in the IRC client. **This may be a breach of your company's internet policy** (if you have one) - be wary! Either ask whoever runs the systems or don't tell anyone at all. At work I have to fill in my proxy information with the hostname, port, username and password. Your username and password will (probably) be what you use to log into your desktop PC (e.g. username: `lastnamefirstname1`, password: `hunter2`). The proxy information may be harder to find - I know mine because I'm an administrator. The hostname might look like a domain (e.g. `proxy.something.com`, and the port will be a number (`3000`). To find these, you might try checking your web browser's proxy settings. I haven't used Textual myself, but I imagine there is a block in the settings for adding your proxy information. Hope this helps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Earlaway · 2015-06-25 19:02 I don't use anything to log on to my own PC, just use my own and log on to the Wifi. Would something like this be able to say whether or not I am behind a proxy? http://amibehindaproxy.com/ And yeah Textual does have a proxy setting. I was told using a http proxy might be a way to get around the filter whatever the filter is, have tried some public proxies that I found by googling but not sure if its just my incompetence or the proxies not working or if this is not actually a solution. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- linuxismylyf · 2015-07-21 17:06 Hey! Just a quick question, how are you checking your ports? Like, what command are you issuing?
