What's the IRC version of @ing someone in a chat? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rorriMnmaD · 2015-06-18 08:36 Sorry for the simple question. I'm still having trouble figuring out IRC. I know how to private message someone (`/msg username`) But how do you "at" them in the channel? Something like: "@rirroMnmaD I agree with you". I've had do something similar to me when responding to me, and my client alerted me ---------------------------------------------------------------------- swtsplin · 2015-06-18 08:49 Just use nickname, it is usually highlighted for its owner. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rorriMnmaD · 2015-06-18 08:51 just type their nick like this? `swtsplin thanks for the tip` ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spling44 · 2015-06-18 09:07 Yes. In high traffic channels I will do `rorriMnmaD: thanks for the tip` as well, but not usually. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- poddus · 2015-06-18 10:17 a number of clients also tab-complete nicks in a channel. try it, start typing someone's nick and then press Tab ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tranoidnoki · 2015-06-18 12:09 Kids these days. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- diodewaal · 2015-06-18 14:13 To be more exact: just chat like you would speak in real life, but instead of using a real name, you use their nickname. You don't have to mention their nickname all the time (just like I never mention your nickname in my comment), if they already know you are talking to them. However, a highlight/mention of their nick may play a sound/beep, flash the screen or display a notification, which will bring more attention to your message (just like in real life talking but without any digital feedback). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- farded · 2015-06-18 15:49 What with thier learning and asking questions. Asinine! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m1ss1ontomars2k4 · 2015-06-19 07:17 Around the networks/channels I frequent it's typical to do a colon after the username, but that should work too. Nickname highlighting is entirely client dependent, really. Some clients will highlight even if the name is found in the middle of the message somewhere, like `thanks for asking rorriMnmaD i'm doing fine`. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- damiankw · 2015-06-19 08:01 this! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- damiankw · 2015-06-19 08:01 Yeah, instead of 'how do I talk to someone', it's 'how do i "at" them'
