[Question] How would I host an IRC on my website? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ShinigamiMachine · 2015-05-27 22:27 Hello, I have a website (ShinigamiMachine.com), and I want to host an IRC on it. How would I go about doing this so that people can connect to irc.shinigamimachine.com, and be able to chat? My website is hosted on AwardSpace with the cheapest non-free plan if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SimplyTheDoctor007 · 2015-05-28 01:10 Find a webclient that supports embedding. I can't think of the exact name right now, but there is one along the lines of "Meebit" that a lot of websites use. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- omniscientburrito · 2015-05-28 01:14 Qchat maybe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ShinigamiMachine · 2015-05-28 01:37 Found what you were talking about, it's called Mibbit. It seems good, but not quite what I'm looking for. It seems that Mibbit is just a widget you can slap on your site, I am trying to host my own unique IRC that can be connected to from mIRC, NetTalk, etc. at irc.shinigamimachine.com or similar. I could've missed something on Mibbit, but if not, then it's not quite what I'm looking for. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ShinigamiMachine · 2015-05-28 01:40 Thanks, but see the reply I posted to /u/SimplyTheDoctor007 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- omniscientburrito · 2015-05-28 01:58 Oh, I assumed you wanted an embedded client. You really didn't even need to mention your website. Anyway, if you're on unix/linux, I've heard UnrealIrc is a good hosting software, and if you just google "Windows irc hosting software" or "free windows irc server software", something like that, you can find software. All you really want is a machine separate from your personal pc(although I doubt an IRC server takes much power, it could be best for security reasons), and to port forward your router(port 6667). If you don't know how to port forward, portforward.com is great. Edit: realized you're paying for hosting. Find out if the host offers shell access, and we can go from there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SimplyTheDoctor007 · 2015-05-28 02:52 So you want to setup your own IRC network then? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ShinigamiMachine · 2015-05-28 03:00 Yes, and I'd like to have it be hosted at AwardSpace with my website. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ShinigamiMachine · 2015-05-28 14:56 It does not offer it without a substantial price increase. I am willing to look into other hosting options though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kellyzdude · 2015-05-28 18:47 Don't. It's not the answer you want, but it is the answer you need. 1. Without SSH, you're essentially screwed. 1. Even without SSH, you could feasibly figure a way to hack cron or a PHP script to install and start an IRC server, but once the provider found it, you'd be screwed. 1. Even if you did manage to hack cron or a script to install and start the server, any hosting provider worth their salt has blocked non-approved inbound ports anyway. Most of the time the allowed ports are 21, 22, 25, 53, 80, 110, 143, 443, 465, 587, 993 and 995. There could be others (WHM, cPanel), but again, already a service listening. If you're committed to running your own IRC server (and really, why would you when there are thousands of empty IRC servers which started with the same good intention I'm sure you have), suck it up, find the cash and pay for a $5/mo VPS somewhere. While you're at it, install Apache, PHP and MySQL, move your shared hosted sites to the VPS, and then save $3/mo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- omniscientburrito · 2015-05-28 20:59 This. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2015-06-11 10:42 Just buy a VPS and run your site and IRCd from there? By the way, I recommend Charybdis for the IRCd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- klockee · 2015-06-20 07:27 Yeah, that's not going to happen.
