Please don't let mIRC die. reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skeeloco · 2015-03-25 18:22 Mirc script support is next to nil this days! A simple working Google search script hasn't existed since 2010. An updated system info would be great. Also looking for a script that can pull simple RSS feeds. Seems all scripting has moved towards TCL these days, mIRC is definitely dying. Should I just force myself into getting an eggie to run the good scripts? I wish I could help support mIRC scripting but I just don't have the mental aptitude nor patience that it takes it learn. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dchelix · 2015-03-25 19:05 > I just don't have the mental aptitude nor patience that it takes it learn. This is why. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- alientity · 2015-03-25 19:48 I'm sorry, but either your Google-Fu is very weak, or you are wanting us to do the work, because searching for '[RSS mIRC](https://www.google.com/search?q=rss+mirc)' returns tons of hits (including a thread in this subreddit) which contain plenty of examples (first hit is a good one, at least on my screen). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RichardG867 · 2015-03-25 20:26 >Google search script Google has a ton of protection (including CAPTCHAs) going on these days. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- takennickname · 2015-03-25 22:17 I think a large reason people stopped caring is that no one wants to support proprietary software. If its author decides to let it stagnate then we're done for. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aperson · 2015-03-25 22:18 Ehh... I have a Perl script to do google searches for me in hexchat. Works fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skeeloco · 2015-03-26 00:16 I've got my blackbelt in Google-Fu. Yes, you can find plenty of results searching however none of these scripts are actually working anymore nor supported. The only working script left was converted to specifically work for Twitter RSS feeds which I don't need. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skeeloco · 2015-03-26 00:17 I've never even considered this, very good point made. It's pretty obvious why most stick to linux based clients. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AltReality · 2015-03-26 00:41 Script was TCL using ircii before mIRC...not the other way around..mIRC is alive and well and thriving. Just because you don't want to invest the time into learning it's script doesn't mean it's dead. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2015-03-26 01:34 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Karunamon · 2015-03-26 03:29 I think part of the reason that nobody likes writing mIRC scripts is that it's tremendously painful compared to other languages. Most of your other IRC programs integrate a well-known scripting language like Perl or TCL rather than invent their own. You can only really effectively write mIRC code with the inbuilt editor, it acts strangely with long scripts (cutting them off, basically), no syntax highlighting, so on and so on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skeeloco · 2015-03-26 05:17 Yes I've realized this attempting to author some simple scripts. A language like Perl carries far and can be used elsewhere. I can't imagine the lulz you'd get putting mIRC scripting on a resume. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NOMODSAREGAY · 2015-03-26 05:45 Why was I banned? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m1ss1ontomars2k4 · 2015-03-26 07:49 Linux-based has nothing to do with it. The mIRC author made a choice a long time ago to make his software proprietary; it has nothing to do with the fact that it runs on Windows. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spling44 · 2015-03-26 08:04 I recommend freenode ##mirc and irc.swiftirc.net #msl and #mircscripting. Hawkee is a good site to look at for mirc scripts, and there is some activity in those channels, and people who are still interesting in mIRC scripting. Also http://en.wikichip.org/wiki/mirc is active and a good resource! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- criodelsol · 2015-03-26 11:11 I believe he means open source or free clients (which are very present on linux and other UNIX-based systems). He's just making a connection between to the two that way. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BaconOverdose · 2015-03-26 13:25 Limnoria is great, and does most things out of the box. You probably wouldn't need to learn python, just use the aka module. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m1ss1ontomars2k4 · 2015-03-26 22:22 I know, but that connection is quite wrong. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- criodelsol · 2015-03-26 22:48 The way he worded it, yes, it doesn't make sense. But I see what he means by that regardless of whether the wording makes it incorrect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m1ss1ontomars2k4 · 2015-03-26 23:37 What he means is also incorrect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- criodelsol · 2015-03-26 23:53 How so? For him, if open-source and/or clients that are free software are what he prefers, even though he said it in a way that's completely different, how is that wrong? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lyspr · 2015-04-06 21:21 mirc is garbage. Insecure, unstable, for profit. Use hexchat or irssi like a normal person ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GreenGully · 2015-04-07 05:56 Google stopped their RSS feeds that's why it isn't working... Edit Whoops. I meant Youtube http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/05/youtube-shuts-down-public-rss- feeds-of-user-subscriptions/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KamranMackey · 2015-04-11 01:49 Oh fudge off. mIRC is not insecure or unstable. Also, HexChat sucks, and irssi isn't even available on Windows. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lyspr · 2015-04-11 02:17 >windows you filthy animal ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KamranMackey · 2015-04-11 03:08 Hey, I'm not a filthy animal. Also not everyone uses Linux. :P
