Anyone else a fan of minimalistic clients? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- teaearlgraycold · 2015-02-09 01:40 http://i.imgur.com/wnVtApK.png ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DSPR · 2015-02-09 07:21 I want a terminal/textual client but everytime I've tried irssi I thought it had bad UX for newbies. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FiXato · 2015-02-09 10:22 Have you tried [WeeChat](http://www.weechat.org) yet? It comes with (imho) saner defaults, built-in support for nicklist, horizontal and vertical window-splits, mutiple scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Python, Ruby, Lua, TCL, Guile/Scheme), built-in scripts repository (for instance /script install buffers.pl to install a buffers/channel list), decent mouse support (/mouse enable) and has an active developer and community. Feel free to drop by on [#weechat on freenode](ircs://chat.freenode.org:6697/#weechat) if you have any questions! (After checking the [F.A.Q.](https://weechat.org/files/doc/weechat_faq.en.html ) and [Quic kstart](https://weechat.org/files/doc/stable/weechat_quickstart.en.htm l ) of course ;)) I also have my own [Guide to WeeChat](http://guides.fixato.org/weechat), but it perhaps focuses a bit too much on installing WeeChat from scratch, as well as setting up your terminal for Unicode and 256 colors support, though it does go into how to configure various settings and getting to know interface elements such as the various default and custom bars such as title, status and nicklist barsl ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bdamos · 2015-02-09 11:41 On the chance you're an emacs user, [ERC](http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/ERC) works well for me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- noeatnosleep · 2015-02-09 15:21 I love minimalistic, but I require macros. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DSPR · 2015-02-09 17:17 I'm guessing you're the fabled Mr. Wee behind WeeChat? ;-) half-kidding. but no haven't tried it yet. I will now thanks. I have a terminal/text/CLI bias for all my tools so I reach for them first wherever I can. IRC has been one domain where I know it could fit that paradigm well so I've been frustrated using GUI's for it instead. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DSPR · 2015-02-09 17:29 thanks but I'm a vi guy. *holds up cross to ward the Unholy away* ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FiXato · 2015-02-09 18:31 No, that would be FlashCode :) I've been a early-ish adopter since 0.2.x though, after being frustrated with irssi's defaults and lacking horizontal splits, and slightly confusing window/container terminology, and still wanting a TUI-based IRC client I could access from all my devices, regardless OS. Anyway, let me know what you think, and feel free to poke me if you have any questions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -Blueness- · 2015-02-09 18:35 Definitely +1 for WeeChat. Has everything a basic IRC client needs I think and its very aethetically pleasing as well. Irssi required far too much tinkering to get it to some basic level that I wanted it to be. It's possible I just sucked at configuring it as well but oh well. Definitely give WeeChat a shot and it plays nice with bitlbee. The simple scripts UI is definitely a must imo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2015-02-09 20:05 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FiXato · 2015-02-09 20:18 What do you mean? It loads just fine here? If the http://guides.fixato.org/weechat redirect doesn't work for you for some reason, try the direct link, http://fixato.org/guides/setting_up_weechat.html If you still can't load it, please tell me what the error message is that you get, and I'll dive in the webserver logs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FiXato · 2015-02-09 20:22 Ah, Vi? Then if/when you try WeeChat, you might like /script install vimode.py It adds support for Vi-like key bindings/commands with normal and insert mode. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2015-02-09 20:27 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 24cal · 2015-02-11 15:13 It's really easy honestly and it's about as minimal as you can get. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flan3002 · 2015-02-16 10:52 [ii](http://tools.suckless.org/ii/) and [sic](http://tools.suckless.org/sic) are minimalistic, this is luxury. ;)
