Free or singlepayment irc ssh shell accounts on 2015 reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2015-02-03 02:08 Any providers? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- o24 · 2015-02-03 02:52 Just get an EC2 instance, top it up with $5 after 12 months of free and keep it going for years. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jdhore1 · 2015-02-03 03:48 That is incorrect. I just did the math. an EC2 t2.micro instance would cost AT LEAST ~$9.36/month, not counting EBS costs. I'm sure OP wants to keep his IRC client running all the time. Currently EC2 t2.micro instances are $0.013/hour. Cost for one day is: 0.013 * 24 = $0.31(2) Cost for one month is: $0.312 * 30 = $9.36 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sauerkrause · 2015-02-03 05:04 Ec2 is free for the first 750 hours per month. There are 744 hours in a 31 day month. I've not had to pay a penny for my single ec2 instance running irssi. After a year, a better deal will probably happen before payment is required. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Plutarch_Rime · 2015-02-03 18:42 I just use Digital Ocean's droplets, at $5 a month. For this you get a whole virtualized system, where you can set up a bouncer if you like (I use znc), or just ssh in and connect to there, maybe in screen or tmux or whatever you like. I don't really think anymore in terms of service accounts ("web hosting," "irc", "shell account") -- I think in terms of owning my own box, virtual or otherwise. These are great times for this sort of thing. (As for single payment, you top-up your account whenever you want, and it just keeps subtracting each month.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yrek_shun · 2015-02-10 06:58 https://nexhost.net/clients/cart.php?gid=11 Cheap VPS for $1.35 a year for 64MB RAM. If you don't mind setting it up yourself you probably wont' find a cheaper price. Not a big name provider perhaps but you can find him on lowendtalk.com if you have questions. Also several tilde clubs have sprung up, check out tilde.club or ctrl-c.club etc. It's essentially a free shell account following the golden rule--don't be a dick. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 24cal · 2015-02-12 07:54 I recently made the switch to a 'box' from shared hosting, shells, etc, etc. It is amazing. I have a couple 512s with DO :p I love DigitalOcean!!!!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 24cal · 2015-02-12 07:54 DigitalOcean has $5/mo boxes OVH has $3/mo boxes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 24cal · 2015-02-12 07:55 I snagged an EC2 just for experimenting. But it makes a great IRC box
