Help an IRC noob out? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProfitPenguin · 2015-02-01 04:03 Hello there friends! I am new to this idea of IRC but would love to start learning more but honestly I have no clue where to start. I've downloaded mIRC and that is about it, any help is more than appreciated. Thanks in advance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VRMac · 2015-02-01 04:34 Let's start with two obligatory things. 1. Everyone on IRC will let you know that you've done something wrong, whether you have or not. 2. You chose the wrong IRC client. Use HexChat instead, since it will work on all platforms, because you will inevitably be converted to GNU+Linux within the year. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anti_body · 2015-02-01 04:39 it's funny you said someone will tell you you've done something wrong immediately and your 2nd comment was that he did something wrong by downloading mirc. mirc is fine and a good start to being on irc. hexchat is (imo) for someone who is using irc A LOT and if you're on many servers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VRMac · 2015-02-01 04:58 > it's funny you said someone will tell you you've done something wrong immediately and your 2nd comment was that he did something wrong by downloading mirc. Exactly. > mirc is fine and a good start to being on irc. hexchat is (imo) for someone who is using irc A LOT and if you're on many servers. Someone getting into IRC now will be into IRC later, and will likely want to be on many servers at once and be compatible across major platforms. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Afro_Samurai · 2015-02-01 05:22 Find a network and choose a server in that network. Set your name and join a channel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anti_body · 2015-02-01 07:02 is that always the case though? i know for me it is, but i've also watched certain servers reduced to a crawl (eg.efnet which is almost now dead or dalnet which is... dead) i do agree some stick around, but a lot are dissuaded and leave ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FiendKing04 · 2015-02-01 12:32 Thanks for the neutral and informative reply. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mumford68 · 2015-02-01 14:30 Are you looking for anything in particular? /help in the MIRC program will bring up a long list of commands. I've used the program to transfer pictures that we have taken to friends. There are many chat rooms on many networks. Some have particular ideas they would like to discuss. Travel, music, learning, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AbsurdTech · 2015-02-05 02:54 IMO from own personal experience start off with HexChat and joining communities, and in the meanwhile learn how to configure mIRC and take advantage of all of it's power and then move to mIRC when you are ready.
