How can someone have his irc open 24/7? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-12-12 09:11 Is there a device for that, or? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hooogan · 2014-12-12 09:28 They are either running the IRC client on their machine and leaving their machine on 24/7 (which isn't unheard of) but more than likely they're using a shell account. So basically their IRC/Session is running on a server somewhere and they're remoting into the server to pick up their session again. I had a friend give me access on his server, where he had the irssi client. I'd use [PuTTY](http://www.putty.org/) and [SSH protocol](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Shell) to connect to his server and I'd be right back where I left off the night before. This is probably a lot of take in if you're new to IRC or the concept of servers in general. It's not complicated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- recourse9 · 2014-12-12 22:41 I'm always surprised that people turn off their computers. I work from home and unless i'm leaving for 24 hours or more my machine is never turned off. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fastolph · 2014-12-12 23:02 Do you have your computer in the same room than where you sleep? Aside from the annoyance when I sleep, I don't like having my computer running and draining power for nothing, it's just pointless. I've got around a less than a minute from BIOS to Desktop on Linux, and half that time on Windows (I've put it on an SSD). It shut down in a few seconds regardless of my OS (unless Windows wants to update of course). The only thing bothering me is opening all my terminals windows and specific commands again when I'm working, but I can use sleep mode for that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- recourse9 · 2014-12-12 23:26 No I have it in my office. I hear ya on the power but for some reason if I get called about an issue i never want to have to vpn and open my ssh sessions and etc.. just makes it easier. Plus we use irc internally and I like to stay logged into the channels. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fastolph · 2014-12-12 23:28 I'm running my IRC client on a dedicated server. Which probably screw up with my "power consumption" argument. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kevans91 · 2014-12-13 06:17 Can confirm, run irssi in a screen on a VPS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m1ss1ontomars2k4 · 2014-12-13 07:28 >Is there a device for that, or? Yes, it is called your computer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theduncan · 2014-12-13 10:53 I do this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theduncan · 2014-12-13 10:54 I run irssi, in a vps 24/7. I use the box for others thing too, but irc is open all the time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Techman- · 2015-01-01 09:50 These days it's easier for users to look into something like IRCCloud or open bouncer services like PanicBNC or EliteBNC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pacotes · 2015-02-16 09:17 IRSSI or Weechat in a screen session on a remote box I use for irc'ing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- peevies · 2015-02-17 13:29 is there a way to do it with hexchat? and you were talking about this right http://remotebox.knobgoblin.org.uk/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pacotes · 2015-02-17 13:57 "A remote box" being "a server, shell account, or VPS somewhere". I personally use a droplet on DigitalOcean for this purpose. Dunno if its possible with Hexchat, as I only ever used Hexchat once to write some scripts for it. I guess you could connect to a ZNC using it.
