I don't have it installed here but try right-clicking a user and
search for the "local alias" setting for that user. Or something like
that; it's been several years since I last used Pidgin.

i might be looking in the wrong place

right clicking on a name gives me Info, Send File, Add..etc

I don't know exactly where it is either. Look for something like Info
or Properties or something similar. Maybe you'll have to add the user
as a contact first … just apply [the tech support
flowchart](https://xkcd.com/627/).

It's also possible that the feature doesn't actually exist; as I said,
I was only telling you what I remember, but I don't have Pidgin here.

Hit tab while typing a nick to complete it, so that solves the length
issue.
