Is IRC right for me? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- masterlizard · 2014-12-08 06:09 I have a group hangout with about 10 people. We mostly talk about computers and we are usually chatting daily. I am looking to move the chat to another website or protocol. I would like to find something a little more manageable. IRC is looking good, and I have a server to host it on, but I have a few questions. First off: I would like some sort of reddit-esque sidebar of sorts with important links and info for newcomers. It doesn't necessarily need to be a sidebar, but I would like an area with important info and links. Second off: customization. We use a lot of pcpartpicker links. For those of you who don't know, pcpartpicker is a website where you can pick parts for a custom computer, and it gives you prices and compatibility details. I would like to maybe add a bot in the future that would take info from these links and then send it into the chat so we can see an overview of the build before we click the link. Third: archives. I would like to save all of the messages and actions for future reference. EDIT: Fourth: spam control. I would want to add about that would scan through messages, and cross reference them with a dictionary. If the message doesn't contain let's say at least 1 word and is less than 4 characters it would be deleted. Additionally, if one message is submitted over and over in a short period of time I would like those to be deleted. Are any of these things possible? Does anybody run an IRC server that could give me a few tips? Anyway, thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- frakking-anustart · 2014-12-08 06:10 These are actually really good questions. I don't know how far IRC could go. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- snuffeluffegus · 2014-12-08 07:37 You could probably build in the functionality with a bot. How much time are you willing to invest in writing your bot though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dijit · 2014-12-08 09:11 pcpartpicker puts stats of the build in the so a bot which parses that will give you a breakdown. (I just tested this by accident) > <dijit> http://pcpartpicker.com/p/y4PC4D > > <Taylor> URL Found: Intel Core i7-4930K, PNY Quadro K2000, Fractal Design Define R4 (Black Pearl) - System Build - PCPartPicker IRC sounds like the right thing, the "sidebar" you mentioned sounds like a `/topic` to me.. shameless plug: if you want to make a channel and see how you get on then I run an IRC network which is free to all. `irc.darkscience.net` +6697 (SSL only) if you need any support from me then I go by the same nick as my reddit username. I'm happy to help. **Edit:** I've added a feature request for that bot to get even better partpicker information: https://github.com/xLink/Taylor/issues/3 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- roaawr · 2014-12-08 09:51 Filtering could be done by writing modules. InspIRCd is a nice IRCd for that ---------------------------------------------------------------------- goldman60 · 2014-12-08 11:13 It sounds like you really need a website with IRC embedded in it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kcsj0 · 2014-12-09 08:24 If you develop a rash, become short of breath or experience chest pain immediately discontinue using IRC. If you have any questions about IRC consult a Unix professional. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Techman- · 2014-12-11 05:32 Since others here are going to plug darkscience I might as well plug my network as well. If you need a good community (and more importantly folks to help you with IRC), give [Techtronix](irc://irc.techtronix.net) a shot. I think the default flood protection features should help aid you in spam/flood control. Logging of messages is a client side thing. That's something you'll definitely have to sort out on your end. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- preferreds · 2014-12-14 03:18 IRC is probably good for your purposes, but it's not necessary to run your own IRCd server. There are tons of smaller networks with channel managing services that would work just fine. The sidebar/customization points can probably be incorporated into the channel topic, and a good bot, respectively. Either the bot, a bouncer or your client can log the channel for your archive. As for spam control, maybe I am misinterpreting but that does not seem necessary if you have a small 10-person community and you trust your members. Even so, IRC offers channel "modes" such that you, as a channel operator, can easily ban, kick or silence users (though you cannot delete afaik). You can also restrict access to your channel either through a password, invite-only mode, a user limit, and/or making your channel invisible to search listings. Hope that helps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- frumious · 2014-12-15 18:45 Make a subreddit for your group to hold any long-running discussion and/or static docs in its wiki. Make a channel on irc.snoonet.org and put a link to your subreddit in the /topic. You can make both private if you wish. You can integrate the two via bots. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Techman- · 2015-01-01 09:54 Why Snoonet? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- frumious · 2015-01-01 14:25 I chose Snoonet as they have as one goal to be aligned with reddit communities and the channel I started with them was meant to augment a subreddit. They were and are also relatively small but technically capable and "upstarty" and that personally appeals to me. I started my channel almost exactly 2.5 years ago now and over that time the network has matured somewhat but they are still not afraid to make big changes. For example, it seems they switch services every other day! -- okay, they have done it twice :). Sometimes this causes technical problems but I like interesting changes more than I dislike minor problems. Freenode might be another good suggestion if the channel topic is about some "peer directed project". They are certainly more mature of a network and relatively huge. In my particular case, the topic of my channel doesn't fit their description. I did not know anything about Techtronix until just now. I'll take a look. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Techman- · 2015-01-01 18:35 The main reason why I asked that was because my own network competes with Snoonet, but only in some arenas. I'm trying to break the "Snoonet is king and can't possibly have a dark side" attitude on reddit. They've done shady things before but I don't feel like covering that here. I will be busy today so I can't give any network tours or anything, but if you say "Techman" in the lounge channel it will send a push notification to my phone. Also, what channel/subreddit? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- noeatnosleep · 2015-01-01 22:40 Snoonet has been really good to me so far. I've set up several subreddits with channels. Everyone is helpful and friendly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fedv · 2015-01-01 23:01 You are not competition to Snoonet. You've offered nothing to Snoonet other than helping users in the #help channel Your obsession is concerning, it really is. But then again you're only a teenager, so it's not worth mine or any body's time pointing out flaws or looking for a reason to point any thing out. Take a hike. Users will use whatever network they're comfortable using, your continuous "Snoonet sucks and this is why" attitude is NOT going to net you any more users. In fact, your users don't even care what you have to say about Snoonet. We see every line. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nenolod · 2015-01-03 11:03 While I agree that "Snoonet sucks" is a terrible marketing strategy, it is unfortunate that you as a community leader of both Snoonet and the world at large (through your career in law enforcement), would feel the need to drag the kid through the mud. I think that reflects badly on Snoonet and yourself, because you're supposed to have more integrity than that. To the extent of the claims I have heard from him about shady practices on Snoonet (using `m_invisible` to snoop on people for example), I cannot comment, but I hope that you don't really operate the network like that. The hostile stance in your reply indicates to me that he might be right. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fedv · 2015-01-04 01:39 nenolod, https://i.imgur.com/chHwVKX.png is a prime example of why I wish the community could see you for how you really act. (This is you, replying to one of my opers) - You have zero tact, and have no right to personally attack myself or any of Snoonet's staff members. I haven't 'dragged the kid through the mud' - Nor is what I do for my career any of your business, or have any thing to do with TM's obsession, or what I do for communities. We have never allowed for abusive modules to be loaded, in fact they weren't even compiled just as a "just in case" I have no hostile stance, but when I see TM telling communities that he made Snoonet what it was, I have to say something, because the obsession just seems so ..out of the box unrealistic that it's hard to tell if he's serious. So, it's fine if you have an opinion about my network, or my staff, but I've never dealt with you or worked with you, so don't mistake any of my opers stance towards yourself as a reflection of my own. From what I recall, none of your actions give me any respect for you, so I'm going to end this with: My care level is at an absolute zero for people such as you, and Techman whod both rather gloat about every thing you've done for communities, rather than staying unknown and continuing to do the best possible for them day in, and day out.
