Trying to use irc. I'd like to keep it open. How do I know if someone is talking about something I'm interested in? or says my name? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stud-d · 2014-12-05 03:30 I've been using irc in a web chat client. I want to download a program, because I want to be notified of when people talk to me. Is there an irc client that does that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Aeoxic · 2014-12-05 04:18 Most IRC clients will flash in the taskbar or make a sound when you're directly mentioned. I believe clients like HexChat or Konversation can manage a list of terms to similarly alert you for. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stpizz · 2014-12-05 09:02 Luckily, after a while you will never go more than a few minutes without checking it except when asleep, so this becomes a non-issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tavaryn · 2014-12-05 10:12 You want to look for the "highlight" feature of your IRC program. Most of not all standalone clients offer this feature, such as mIRC and Hexchat. If you need help finding, let us know which client you choose and we can give you more specific advice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stud-d · 2014-12-05 14:22 Thanks! I want a free cross-platform option that has a GUI or TUI. I think hexchat fits that. Do you prefer one over the other? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stud-d · 2014-12-05 14:24 which client do you use? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tavaryn · 2014-12-05 14:35 While MIRC isn't technically free you can just keep hitting skip on the buy dialog (AFAIK, to be honest I bought it years ago). HexChat is for real free. I prefer mIRC's interface, but admittedly HexChat is a more well written program, and TingPing (who lurks here) does an excellent job of maintaining it. So all in all, I recommend Hexchat. I use it now, even after paying for a legal copy of mirc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bllgvn · 2014-12-05 18:02 I use hexchat and it can be set to alert you when you are mentioned ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EmDeeEm · 2014-12-05 20:01 hexchat is great. Only downside: If you set a specific word to highlight you (because your nick), it does it across all networks even if you only want to do it on one. (Assuming you're on more than one server at once) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stud-d · 2014-12-05 20:25 cool. thanks for the tip. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Aeoxic · 2014-12-06 01:32 I use HexChat on Windows, AndChat on Android, and Textual on OS X. As far as I know all three clients are able to set up keyboard alerts. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-12-06 01:51 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-12-06 01:52 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antagon1st · 2014-12-06 01:54 It's a little dated, but totally full of features... A script I've used for years called [Nexgen Acidmax](http://http://www.scriptheaven.net/downloadview- details-214-Nexgen_Acidmax.html). It has a GUI-based "desktop window" and has some killer looks to it, in my opinion. It's definitely worth a look into. It has the highlight feature. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Techman- · 2014-12-06 15:37 I'm wondering what web client you are using because KiwiIRC does support desktop notifications. Most desktop clients that I know of do support notifications. Terminal clients might beep the console if it supports it. IRCCloud supports notifications for highlights on all platforms that you use it on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TingPing · 2014-12-08 12:39 > HexChat is a more well written program, and TingPing (who lurks here) does an excellent job of maintaining it. Lies! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TsuDoughNym · 2014-12-29 23:30 Ting, think you could update the HexChat website to accurately reflect the install location of the program in Windows 7? I found mine in %APPDATA%/Roaming/HexChat, but the documentation just says %APPDATA% without any mention of the sub directories. There also isn't a config folder for me to place themes within that subdirectory. Here's what I see in explorer: http://i.imgur.com/1K6r7I4.jpg ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TingPing · 2014-12-30 06:19 Type %APPDATA% into Windows Explorer. It is correct. Also themes are just unzipped there, there is no folder for them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TsuDoughNym · 2014-12-30 12:28 Understood, thanks for explaining. I seldom use the address bar in windows explorer so I didn't think of that!
