Problem inputting special characters using AltGr in Hexchat.

I use the Colemak keyboard layout, and it lets you press AltGr+\ and
then other characters in order to use some common special characters.
I just switched from chatzilla to hexchat, and the latter is not
letting me use that function. When I press AltGr+\, it types a *, and
whatever I type immediately afterward is just the normal character
instead of the special characters.

Anyone have any idea what might be causing this or how to make it work
the way I want?

I have a friend who also had trouble getting his custom layout to work
with GTK+ (on Windows) if I'm not mistaken. I'm afraid not much can be
done.

Go to chat.freenode.net/6667  and /join #hexchat you'll find the
