freenode compromised, recommends changing NickServ password reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Guest1388 · 2014-09-13 14:40 The following notice was received at 10:33:22 EDT. Sharing it to make users aware. > [Global Notice] Earlier today the freenode infra team noticed an anomaly on a single IRC server. We have identified that this was indicative of the server being compromised by an unknown third party. We immediately started an investigation to map the extent of the problem and located similar issues with several other machines and have taken those offline. For now, we recommend that every change their NickServ password as a precaution. I set a new password just last night. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TwiztedZero · 2014-09-13 20:14 **Reset Your Password** /msg NickServ SET PASSWORD NeWpAsWoRd * Don't forget to put your new pass into your clients password field. * Type your command(s) in a services tab not a room tab. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chaz6 · 2014-09-13 21:29 You can also use client ssl certificates to authenticate yourself on freenode https://freenode.net/certfp/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DooubleFap · 2014-09-14 02:30 go ahead, hack me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- farded · 2014-09-14 14:50 Why not a room tab? Doesn't it just send a private message to nickserv either way? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kylebaked · 2014-09-14 15:33 I'm not too sure if it matters, but I always do mine in a services tab just so theres no possibility it will send to the channel. Like if you miss the leading slash or add a leading space or something. Just and extra precaution. Or maybe theres some one in the channel named nickserve or nlckserv to catch autocompletes (although nickserv would complete first in those cases, but you get the idea) or maybe common typos. Doing it in a services tab you don't have to worry about of those things. Then again there might be a more technical reason for doing it too that I'm unaware of. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TwiztedZero · 2014-09-14 15:38 Because if you make a mistake in a room tab like say an extra space before the backslash - O-Whoopsie - then your pass ends up in cleartext in a room where all the eyeballs slurp it up. So yeah a services tab is so much safer. Common sense, eh? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- XavierNite · 2014-11-12 14:46 LOL me too, only because I couldn't remember it & had to reset. I typically use certificate authentication so when I had to add a new fingerprint I was like... uhhh what was my pass again? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- XavierNite · 2014-11-12 14:47 I approve of this message :P Certificate authentication is the best thing since sliced bread!
