On-demand history bot? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bisl · 2014-09-03 20:14 I have a group of friends that are moving from a long-standing skype channel to IRC. One thing we're missing though is the ability to read messages from when we weren't connected since many of us are on laptops, and so we were hoping to find a bot that could replay messages from the channel over a specified time range. I've tried some basic searches "IRC history bot" "IRC channel replay bot" but being somewhat inexperienced beyond basic mIRC usage I don't really know what I'm looking for. Does such a bot exist? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seiyria · 2014-09-03 20:20 You could use a ZNC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ClockKonsole · 2014-09-03 20:24 +1 ZNC would be ideal for this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- twodayslate · 2014-09-03 21:42 What you want is a bouncer like ZNC. If that is too complicated for you I recommend irccloud ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bisl · 2014-09-03 23:24 It may be--I'll check out irccloud too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bisl · 2014-09-03 23:25 We are a mix of windows and mac users unfortunately, and at first glance this appears to be a *nix tool, however ZNC does appear to be perfectly suited to this purpose. Going to keep reading. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seiyria · 2014-09-03 23:37 Typically you set up a ZNC on a *nix server and log into that, so you could just get a cheapo VPS and you all can use the same ZNC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pteraspidomorphi · 2014-09-04 16:28 Keep in mind that, for the bot, sending a large amount of content to one or more users quickly from the server side will run afoul of the server's flood limits. The bouncer is between you and the server, so it doesn't have this problem. If you want a remote bot instead of a bouncer, you can send unlimited quantities of data around the server's limits by having the bot and the user establish a direct connection. The DCC protocol can do this, and is supported by nearly all modern IRC clients. The only downside is that the log you receive will be on a separate window. Eggdrop bots already have built in channel logging and a high level API for establishing DCC chat connections; The feature you are requesting would require only a small amount of additional scripting. As such, you could look into Eggdrop (Tcl) scripts and maybe you'll get lucky.
