Shell Account vs VPS reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-07-24 10:13 Hi guys. I signed up to a shell provider and I'm happy enough with it, although there is some lag. It is only £5 a month so I can't complain. I use this for IRC only. I log in using Irssi via screen and can pick up my session easily enough. A few days after I'd signed up, oddly enough, Amazon sent me an email about their AWS services. To be honest I found it hard to figure out but there was an offer called EC2 which gives you a year's free VPS access and, if you go over you limit, you get charged very little. This got me thinking about the pros and cons of a VPS vs a shell provider. Essentially they seem to be very similar. Do any of you use a VPS for IRC purposes only? If I had a VPS I don't think I would use it for anything else other than IRC.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- asphalt_incline · 2014-07-24 10:32 I have a VPS that I pay US$5 per month for. I run a znc bouncer on it and I also use it to host my web site among other things. I think it's a better value than just a shell account. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- moo9001 · 2014-07-24 11:02 You can also run Quassel code on VPS: http://quassel-irc.org/ (2010 take on bouncer concept) Cheap VPSes http://lowendbox.com/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stpizz · 2014-07-24 15:11 Or alternatively Weechat, which is much the same idea but slightly nicer (imo) clients. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kill_box · 2014-07-24 15:28 Get a non-managed VPS from amazon, ram node, or Rocket VPS. All very cheap. Once you have a VPS, you'll start finding awesome stuff you want to do with it until you need an upgrade. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PirateKitteh · 2014-07-24 15:38 WeeChat is just my favorite client ever, and I never thought I would switch from Irssi. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-07-24 15:50 The Amazon VPS is AWS, right? Would the EC2 package be suitable for running irc? As I said, I find that the Amazon AWS services to be complex in their billing and set up. Most VPS services seem to be simpler. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kill_box · 2014-07-24 16:24 To be honest, I'm not really sure. I know people can install and run tor on them; which is how I came across them. They do seem a bit complicated, which is why I went with a traditional VPS provider. I know 256 MB of ram on Debian with no control panel is enough to run a terminal IRC client or Tor node/client. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-07-24 18:18 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-07-24 18:32 That's cheap! I actually went with ramnode for 6 months:) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nanowire · 2014-07-24 20:09 The $36 lifetime Arpa membership doesn't give you access to screen though. You need to be MetaArpa level which is like $36 a year I believe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Or0ku_Saki · 2014-07-24 22:12 It does allow for outbound IRC on your lifetime ARPA membership. Login enter the IRC command and your dropped into entering your server join commands. http://imgur.com/oMOIOPP ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Or0ku_Saki · 2014-07-24 22:12 I did a Ramnode account for a few months. It's a good service. I was using it for the small VPS though, not for IRC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-07-25 13:17 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fedv · 2014-07-27 06:17 Knock it off with that shit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- localtoast · 2014-07-27 23:59 but not screen/tmux, which does attachment - you'd still need to reconnect whenever you wanted to change machine/reboot/whatever ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flotwig · 2014-09-10 14:41 64mb is enough, even. But if you're going to do more than just IRC I recommend 128mb. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- XavierNite · 2014-11-12 14:53 You could have a VPS for about the same price (vmnode, ramnode, hostfolks, take your pick) and you get full root access with a VPS. Make sure that the provider you choose allows IRC traffic of course. You'll get a much better value out of your service with a VPS. Also bare in mind that some shell providers may be banned from various networks due to past abuse from their users (my network bans insomnia 24/7 because of abusive users & their lack of identd to ban any specific user from accessing our IRC), with a VPS you get your own dedicated IP address & nobody else will share that with you so only you can get it banned.
