Looking for keen people to build a new network reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- damiankw · 2014-07-20 09:13 I currently have a (very) small network which just runs UnrealIRCd and a custom set of services based on the AustNET OPAS, written from scratch. Basically we are looking for anyone who is still interested in IRC, interested in having their own server and being admin on a small network. The main guys in this team are in for their own reasons (me, development; another xbox; others just chat). We are a friendly, yet odd bunch and would be interested in anyone joining us. We have very limited requirements when it comes to linking, so if you think you want to be part of a small community let me know here, or private. We aren't against changing IRCd's, however the services are one of the primary reasons I am around so I need to be able to link them into whatever. I don't really want to link it, but join us on irc.nerdhacks.net #help / #Aeon :) I hope I hear from some of you soon! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-07-20 13:22 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RonDiaz · 2014-07-20 22:01 I'm a long time IRCer but don't know much about the server side. Why? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FiendKing04 · 2014-07-20 22:14 Unreal is a fork of a fork of a fork of one of the really old IRCd's, and has a lot of issues because of it. For small servers, most people (including myself) use InspIRCd. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- damiankw · 2014-07-21 05:35 We use it mainly because the small group of us who founded it are from the 90's when Unreal was a thing. We're looking at pushing to InspIRCd, just looking at doing the services at the moment! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- damiankw · 2014-07-21 05:36 Well this could be a perfect opportunity for it, if you're interested. There really isn't that much to the server side of things, at the end of the day I think server maintenance is more of a hobby than anything else. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FiendKing04 · 2014-07-21 06:29 Well, I actually have my own network that I started, but my VPS went from over three months of uptime to a month of restarting at least five times a day, and I've had too much going on IRL to bother with it. Still pisses me off though. Can't have my damn IRC up for more than a couple of hours. Complete and utter bullshit. Anyways, I'll check out your network. :p ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-07-21 07:13 Unreal is not very modern. If your community is small anyways, why not just register a channel for each of your communities? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RonDiaz · 2014-07-21 14:47 IRL sucks up all my time as well, I had InspiRCD running on a Hostigation VPS I have for a long time but it got restarted around Christmas and I haven't had the time to try to get it going again. I didn't really have anybody on it anyways, just trying to keep IRC alive since I had so much fun on it from like 1997-2004 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RonDiaz · 2014-07-21 14:49 Normally I would be interested but between work, graduate school, and my toddler, my days are full I'm not sure there's much of a contribution I can make. I will try to log on my client and idle around though at least. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Koda239 · 2014-07-24 03:20 I've used IRC for awhile. Jumping from client to client trying to get a hang of one I like. Using Textual right now. I'm interested in learning more about the back-end of networks and how things run. I have a fuzzy picture, but don't really have a "mentor" or a "guide" on the subject at this time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheGreatDavid · 2014-07-24 04:50 Your network is a JOKE. Why would anyone want to link up a server to your pathetic network is beyond me. Sounds like you are still living in the 90's.. Fool. Best Regards, TheGreatDavid ---------------------------------------------------------------------- damiankw · 2014-07-25 04:41 I'm the same! Good ol' IRC from the late 90's/early 2000's :P ---------------------------------------------------------------------- damiankw · 2014-07-25 09:22 You have a linked server, you asshole! And you love that it's 90's style! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HJFDB · 2014-09-12 02:20 Inspircd and anope for services, seconded. Simple to set up, all the features you could ever want, and stable. I've been running it for years. It will run on a basic debian server without a gui and use hardly any resources. I miss the good old days of bahamut and dreamforge..
