I'm just now getting into IRC stuff and I would like to know what a good client would be. reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VoxxSkies · 2014-07-01 19:53 I did a search on this sub and found some posts that seemed to be rather old, does anyone have any current recommendations? EDIT: Since I forgot which part of the internet I'm on, I'm using windows 7. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AmphetaminePowered · 2014-07-01 20:05 You did not indicate what operating system you're using. Popular clients include mIRC for Windows, irssi/bitchx (CLI) and Xchat (GUI) for linux, Andchat for android, mibbit and kiwiirc for web. Many others also exist. There are also a large number of multi-protocol clients which support IRC as well: e.g. Pidgin, Trillian. Keep in mind that conversation on IRC is sporadic and you will miss any conversation that occurs while you are not connected. Therefore it's better to have a client you can leave running for long periods of time even when you're not actively chatting (idling.) Keep that in mind, or consider running/using a bouncer (znc, bnc, etc.) to keep you connected while your client is closed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VoxxSkies · 2014-07-01 20:12 I know the answer to this is probably going to be ridiculously tiny but how much bandwidth would leaving an irc client when left up use per hour? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-07-01 20:13 There's been some recent discussion here: http://www.reddit.com/r/irc/ comments/27lwue/i_used_irc_for_the_first_time_ever_have_no_idea/ci22sa g – I hope this helps you. TLDR (for desktops, not tablets and smartphones): if(only_few_channels() && firefox_user()) { return chatzilla; } else { return kvirc; } ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wmcscrooge · 2014-07-01 20:19 weechat for terminal and hexchat for gui seems like a pretty good consensus unless you're looking for something specific. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VoxxSkies · 2014-07-01 20:34 Would you know where I can learn how to set that up? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- liquoranwhores · 2014-07-01 20:35 Hexchat or Quassel! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KindOne · 2014-07-01 20:40 When I was in 1000+ channels (script testing and stuff), I would do anywhere from 3-10MB an hour depending on the time of day, according to NetWorx (bandwidth monitor). That's a bit of an extreme, but it should give you an idea. If you are only in a few channels, it will be a heck of a lot less. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wmcscrooge · 2014-07-01 20:45 which one? both clients should have pretty good installation notes on their website. a note: weechat is better for linux support (maybe osx) than windows. on windows, hexchat is definitely the best. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VoxxSkies · 2014-07-01 20:48 I thought you were suggesting the use of both... would you care to define terminal to see if I'm just now realizing what you meant by it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- faghat · 2014-07-01 21:00 Weechat uses a command line interface as opposed to the graphical interface something like hexchat uses. Weechat would be used on Linux or something whereas hexchat is most used on Windows. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wmcscrooge · 2014-07-01 21:04 oh, so sorry if I confused you! I meant, if you're more comfortable in the terminal (which is more likely for linux (maybe osx) people, for windows terminal would be cygwin), than weechat is the better option. If you prefer gui (window) applications, then you should go with hexchat. Honestly, it should be linux=weechat, windows=hexchat, osx=? (I don't have a apple computer, so I have no suggestions here) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VoxxSkies · 2014-07-01 21:13 Alright, thank you for your help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wmcscrooge · 2014-07-01 21:38 no problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nupogodi · 2014-07-02 00:10 irssi ---------------------------------------------------------------------- n88 · 2014-07-02 00:45 All day ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-07-02 11:04 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- operating_bastard · 2014-07-02 13:10 I actively participate in one fairly busy channel and idle in a couple more, and I average 60mb a month in irc traffic ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cknipe · 2014-07-02 13:16 BitchX ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-07-04 00:06 > Andchat for android Is it the best one with the most feature? What do you think of AndroIRC or HoloIRC? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-07-04 18:25 Another vote for Weechat. IMO it's tricky to configure but it's a great client and the learning curve is worth it. It is my favourite OSX terminal client.
