How does one deal with join/part clutter? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zobatch · 2014-06-14 22:39 I realize I can hide/show join/part messages. But, at least in HexChat, it's an all-or-nothing deal. For a small channel, it's not a real issue to see all of the joins and parts. But in larger channels the number of join/part messages can greatly outnumber the actual conversation messages. Is there a middle-ground? Maybe something that hides joins/parts if that user's last activity in the channel was more than X minutes ago? I wouldn't want this to be just about helping me, so I encourage responses not to limit themselves to HexChat and to post their own solutions (assuming they exist). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-06-14 22:52 You could ask for help in [#hexchat](irc://irc.freenode.net/hexchat) on freenode and see if somebody has a script, etc. For my own solution, I personally use [IRCCloud](https://www.irccloud.com), and one of the most favorite thing about them is that their clients automatically collapse join/part/quit messages, as well as certain mode changes (such as someone being opped). Here's an example of a collapsed message from IRCCloud: ``` 6:16 PM → skinkitten, sunwind, GrannyGoose, Myhorta, pmodern, easior and Katiebeth28 joined ← JoshTheEnder left ⇐ kmg90, Somasis, Ward, barjac and Tux[Qyou] quit ↔ nurabsal, PurpleDog and Truman popped in ↔ chaosblade, JerryT, petris, Firebat|Off (was Firebat) and Biafra nipped out • SBK[BORABORA] → ScumBagKing ``` ^ That was from #hexchat on freenode, btw :P. Not saying that other clients don't have message collapsing. If anyone else knows about clients that offer message collapsing, put a mention of it in the thread too :). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tinfoil_hats · 2014-06-14 22:59 From http://wiki.xkcd.com/irc/hide_join_part_messages#HexChat > For a single channel: > left-hand window list → right-click the channel → Settings → Check "Hide join/part messages" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sentriz · 2014-06-15 01:34 Install Python for your HexChat and grab this script [here](https://gi thub.com/TingPing/plugins/blob/master/HexChat/smartparts.py). smartparts.py: > "Intelligently hide parts, joins, autoop, and nick changes" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zobatch · 2014-06-15 02:15 This I know. But I'd still like to know that I shouldn't waste my time answering somebody who joined, asked a question, and then bailed before I could answer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- austindkelly · 2014-06-15 14:52 /window level -join -part -crap ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zobatch · 2014-06-15 15:55 What does this do?
