IRC on iPad3 reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- autumntime · 2014-06-07 19:31 Hello I will be taking a course at the end of the month that relies on irc. I am new to irc and while I will set up on my desktop, I am wondering if there is a way to follow along on my iPad should I be traveling. I checked the App Store and while there are some apps, none have any reviews or ratings. Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-06-07 19:34 All that I know for the iOS platform is IRCCloud for iOS. That is a very user friendly app for first time users of IRC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ThatOneRoadie · 2014-06-07 19:36 I'm partial to either [Colloquy](https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/colloquy-irc- client/id302000478?mt=8) or [LimeChat](https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/limechat-irc- client/id298766460?mt=8) myself. They both are pretty full featured, but backgrounding an IRC chat is an issue on iOS Clients (when an app is multitask backgrounded, its internet connections are closed). I'd recommend the use of a bouncer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- autumntime · 2014-06-07 19:40 Thanks, I'll check those out! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- autumntime · 2014-06-07 19:41 Thanks! So, I am very new to IRC. What do you mean about a bouncer? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ThatOneRoadie · 2014-06-07 19:48 A bouncer is a special type of server that runs both an IRC client and an IRC server. It connects to your IRC server of choice, and remains connected for you. You connect to the Bouncer, and it relays any messages you missed. The advantage is that it relays the messages, and doesn't disconnect from the IRC server (so you don't spam the server with join/quit messages). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- autumntime · 2014-06-07 20:38 Okay, thank you! I apologize if this is self explanatory - would I download an app and then download a bouncer? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ThatOneRoadie · 2014-06-07 21:07 You would download the app and then either set up a server with the bouncer, or use a pre-created bouncer service like [EliteBNC](http://www.elitebnc.org/). You'd then connect the app to the EliteBNC servers, then set your EliteBNC account to connect to the servers (Freenode, Snoonet, etc) that you want to chat on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- autumntime · 2014-06-07 21:27 My understanding is that everything on irc is public. If so, is there a privacy concern should I install one of the apps mentioned below? IRC Cloud is free, so I might try that just to get the hang of it then purchase one. Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- autumntime · 2014-06-07 23:28 Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-06-08 05:12 You're welcome ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jonathanrp · 2014-06-08 16:47 I switched to irccloud from hexchat after using it for years. It's a great client! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MillenniumFalc0n · 2014-06-08 18:28 What kind of privacy concerns do you have? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- autumntime · 2014-06-09 02:11 To be honest, I don't really know. Just every time I read about IRC, I am cautioned for security risks - more than I'm cautioned anywhere else I sign up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- autumntime · 2014-06-18 18:57 Thanks!
