Has Hexchat stopped working for anyone else? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-04-18 05:05 It constantly disconnects me. Other clients work, but not Hexchat. I'm running windows 7 64 bit. I'm in the middle of chatting and then (disconnected) It happens like every 30 seconds. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, and tried everything. How do I fix this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pteraspidomorphi · 2014-04-18 14:45 Ping timeout? Did you change any settings? Also if hexchat identifies itself, make sure your network hasn't banned it for some reason. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HomuraAkuma · 2014-04-18 16:30 It sounds like a windows firewall issue to me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Herecomethedrums · 2014-04-18 17:05 Yah, it says "no ping reply for 30 seconds, disconnecting" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Herecomethedrums · 2014-04-18 17:11 It's not, I checked. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cronyx · 2014-04-18 17:24 Hexchat says that, or the server? I'm wondering if Hexchat, you could tell it in a setting somewhere not to give a fuck and never to disconnect unless you initiate. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Herecomethedrums · 2014-04-18 17:27 This what I see in the "freenode" tab http://i.imgur.com/WcWtYmZ.png ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-04-18 18:27 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pteraspidomorphi · 2014-04-18 18:29 Try /raw ping SOMETHING or /quote ping SOMETHING and see if you get a response (I doubt you won't). Likewise the server pings the client to make sure he's still there (that's a normal part of the protocol) and if it fails to respond twice, it's disconnected as a "ghost connection" (that's the ping timeout disconnection). Look for a setting, script or addon on the client that may be preventing this response, or make sure an external security software isn't filtering the response for some reason. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Herecomethedrums · 2014-04-18 18:39 Yeah that didn't work. My firewall isn't blocking it. Hexchat is working now, but it's really rare that it is working for more then 5 minutes at a time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Herecomethedrums · 2014-04-18 18:39 And how do I do that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pteraspidomorphi · 2014-04-18 18:49 Oh, it doesn't always fail? Then you may be experiencing packet loss. Packet loss may be causing your ping responses to be dropped. Are you on windows? Open a cmd window and type: ping -t google.com Let it run for about one hundred lines and then press CTRL+C. See if there was any packet loss. If there is no packet loss, try again but instead of google.com use your IRC server's hostname. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Herecomethedrums · 2014-04-18 18:54 It doesn't always fail, only like 95% of the time. I'm only getting a 2 percent packet loss, but I've gotten up to 6 percent before, which isn't that bad. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-04-18 20:27 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Herecomethedrums · 2014-04-18 20:31 I'm already using that, apparently ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-04-18 20:52 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Herecomethedrums · 2014-04-18 20:56 I'll check it out, thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pteraspidomorphi · 2014-04-18 21:26 It should be 0. Anything above 0 is bad! Thought experiment: You said you drop after 5 minutes. That's 10 blocks of 30 seconds. If the server pings every 30 seconds, and if you dropped after a single missed response (probably not the case but let's simplify for this example), your probability of dropping would be the probability of dropping at least one packet out of the 10 ping responses. Your ping response will make it 95% of the time. 95% \^ 10 ~= 60%. There is a 40% chance you have dropped before 5 minutes in this situation. Now, I believe you usually have to miss 2 responses in a row to drop, and that calculation is a bit more complex, but th e principle is the same - if you have a significant amount of packet loss like 5% you're going to drop sooner or later. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Herecomethedrums · 2014-04-18 21:34 yeah, but I have a pretty poor connection. I'd say 2 percent is better than 10. I know someone who had like 86 percent packet loss. It could always be worse ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flotwig · 2014-04-19 02:28 Try connecting via SSL. A different port could help.
