IRC Network for just chatting with friends. reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-03-22 03:27 I've gotten about half a dozen of my friends to join irc and we've just been meeting up in an unregistered channel on freenode. I was looking at registering the channel, but it doesn't fit the policy (working on projects and such), what network would be the best for this purpose? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anomoly · 2014-03-22 03:37 From the Snoonet [Rules & Guidlines](http://snoonet.org/rules): >Channels may be freely registered on Snoonet, however if subreddit moderators claim an already-registered channel with the same name as their subreddit it shall be granted upon request. >Non-subreddit channels should be registered in the following format: ##example Sounds like that may be an option. Alternatively, if you're into tech projects, you can setup and run your own IRC server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CuriousTee · 2014-03-22 03:39 http://www.snoonet.org/rules says you can register a non-subreddit channel with two # characters. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonno_FTW · 2014-03-22 07:46 As an alternative to snoonet, pick rizon if you want a registered channel that you can do whatever you want (within legal bounds). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aedriolo · 2014-03-22 13:09 There are literally 100s of networks, as mentioned you could even host your own! If you just want to chat and don't have any bouncers or bots to protect your channel and keep being opped, you should choose a network with network-services. Most of the bigger networks got them, except efnet. Heres a [list](http://irc.netsplit.de/networks/top100.php). Out of those, i would recommend Quakenet, since it got services and you can spoof(hide) your hostname. There are many other channels, mostly about gaming, which could be interesting. If you want channels about other topics, like more technical, you could try spotchat, efnet or freenode. That info is ofcourse far from complete. So just give it a try and connect to some networks and see how they fit your needs. If you use mIRC you can press ALT + L to get a complete list of the channels and mostly the message of the day (motd, which is shown to you when connecting) gives you information about the services and policies of the server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Karunamon · 2014-03-22 15:21 +1 for Rizon - they're a lot more stable than freenode (it seems like FN is always in the middle of netsplit craziness whenever I'm logged in there) and are open to just general usage. It's also a fairly popular network with lots of different topics going on ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_am_Minthe · 2014-03-22 18:45 I've always liked Dalnet, servers are stable and all, and it has nickserv and chanserv to register your nick and channel to keep ops. Dalnet is considered "uncool" these days by a lot of IRC elitists, but it works great for me.
