My ISP blocks irc ports? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- isoplex · 2014-03-19 16:08 I use the internet from a college, it blocks things like imgur, reddit, etc. and alsoe blocks irc, i tried getting in irc with proxychains but i get " ERROR :Closing Link: 85.17.24.95 (*** Banned )" which i think is because irc doesnt allow getting in via tor" i use pidgin for getting in irc regulary... any idea? the goal is to get in irc from pidgin, maybe a proxy, another port or something? please halp! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-03-19 16:50 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AltReality · 2014-03-19 17:04 That error message sounds like your IP is blocked from that specific server or network. Or possibly your whole colleges subnet could be blocked. Try a different server and network...and also try to connect to the same server from a different IP block...like maybe a starbucks or something. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-03-19 18:32 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- isoplex · 2014-03-19 18:43 in pidgin changed the port to 6697 with ssl and it splash me " ERROR :Closing Link: manning2.torservers.net (*** Banned )" with 7000 it doesnt even try to connect. and i wont use any web-based client because i would use OTR encryption for private chats... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-03-19 19:00 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-03-19 19:01 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- isoplex · 2014-03-19 19:20 Why you think is nasty dirty ? which other Free Software client would you recommend? i think the ip is banned beacuse like i little understand the other day reading about tor, IRC doesnt let you connect if you use tor or something like that, is hard to understand... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-03-19 19:36 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-03-19 19:56 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fastolph · 2014-03-19 20:04 > which other Free Software client would you recommend? Hexchat. KvIRC. Weechat if you're into CLI. If you don't mind web-based clients (also nonfree), if [Mibbit](http://www.mibbit.com/) isn't blocked by your college you might use it to connect to IRC, if I remember correctly the connexion is made from their server so you'll get around your blocking. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jbroome · 2014-03-19 21:53 Or it's like freenode and blocks tor access to the main irc servers. You have to use the hidden tor service, or there's a tor exit node on that IP and that's why you're banned. Check the web page for the irc network you're trying to connect to for their tor policies. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-03-20 19:32 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-03-23 15:25 If you are connected via TOR and mibbit lets you through, you can still get blocked if the network you are connecting to has webirc blocks set up for Mibbit. KiwiIRC is a open source web irc client. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-03-23 15:26 If you are into using Linux, and own a VPS, you can set up a very simple SSH proxy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- isoplex · 2014-03-23 18:05 I use trisquel by default, is there simething else than free as in freedom software?
