Some questions I've been having about IRC (noob questions) reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-03-12 03:40 I've known about irc for a while but for the last month or so I've been spending more and more time on it, but there are still some things I don't get/concern me. Here's a [screenshot](http://i.imgur.com/dznJPGb.png) for reference First off, when I do a /whois for my name, it spews back my ip address and some other things. When I do a /whois on anyone else, it doesn't show any IP address or anything. Is there a setting or something to change. I notice it says the other guy has a "secure connection." I'm using Hexchat in case you couldn't tell and I was wondering if there was a guide or something that explained what all the colors mean next to the users' names and what color the actual text is? I know green is OP and blue is user and that's about it. Not really a good screenshot for this question, but in other rooms I'll see a guy with an orange circle next to him and people with other colors. Last question that's on my mind right now. Depending what network I'm on, I may or may not have a blue circle next to my username in the lower left corner (see orangebox in screenshot). Why is this? Thanks in advance. I've tried googling all of these ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Techzen · 2014-03-12 04:01 The green dots are next to the people who have full ops. The blue are people who have "voice". All this means is those people with voice can still chat if the room is muted. Other colors you might see might be "half ops"... Ops that can't kick another op. Full ops can kick another op. Another color, if at the top of the list above green dotted names might be "admin". I don't use hexchat so not sure what colors admin and half ops would be. But Admin would always be at the top of the list, followed by full ops, then half ops and finally those with voice. Hope this helps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kaysb · 2014-03-12 06:21 There is several different versions of irc-servers out there, and they all behave somewhat different. Snoopnet is using InspIRCd. One of the features used on Snoopnet is hiding client ips. This feature will hide your real ip for other users (except for the IRC-admins that can view, or convert your hidden-ip back to the real one). If you dont want the server to hide -your- ip, you can remove the -x flag on your user; /mode nickname -x But, you can not do this with other users. To see the other flags you can change, run /quote HELP mode /quote HELP umodes /quote HELP chmodes The line "is using a secure connection" indicates that the user uses SSL/TLS to connect to the IRC-server (is using a encrypted connection). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kellyzdude · 2014-03-12 08:43 The easiest way to see what you look like to other people is to clone yourself - load up a second tab, connect to the same network, and have each connection /whois themselves and each other. In most cases the only users that see "is connecting from" line with the IP address are yourself and network staff. Your hostname may or may not be masked (umode +x may be available if other users have it), this is shown in the [nick] (ident@host): realname line, which everyone sees.
