i want to use a third party irc service with my own domain can it be done? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-18 22:56 i haven't decided on what irc server i want to use yet BUT i'd like to use my own existing domain.. can this be done? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jhoneycutt · 2014-02-18 22:58 Sure, you can point a domain name at any IP they give you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-18 23:00 so for example i can point irc.mydomain.com to irc.freenode.org? how? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-18 23:00 You can choose a network, and then after that set a CNAME record for your irc subdomain, to the subdomain of the IRC network you choose. If you want to look at a few networks, I have a few suggestions such as mine and Snoonet :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-18 23:03 cool i can do CNAME in cloudflare ty and sure i'd like some suggestions.. and pros/cons if you could :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jhoneycutt · 2014-02-18 23:05 Yes, you can. You just need to set up the DNS record appropriately. Your domain service probably offers a DNS service and can assist you with this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-18 23:07 cool ty ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-18 23:07 If you're looking for a network that is very devoted to reddit and its communities, then Snoonet is definitely the most solid option. There are plenty of other large networks out there, such as QuakeNet, DalNet, IRCNet, EsperNet, etc but those are all pretty large and all of them have kinda sucky feature support. For example Espernet doesn't do vhosts which has caused a few communities to leave them :). I do also have a network, but before I'd want to discuss it I'm interested in what kind of community you are bringing :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-18 23:08 well it's a small network of a few friends so i don't need anything fancy although things like vhosts are needed :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-18 23:11 What kind of topics do they cover, etc? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-18 23:52 random tbh it's just for 5 odd friends to hang out on :p ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-19 00:08 As long as they don't violate my net's TOS they are cool on my net. If you are interested PM me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-19 17:06 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthaneezy · 2014-02-19 17:10 It's called an A record. Your resolution for irc.mydomain.com will give you an IP result. It's kind of obsolete, the only people who care will be you. You also lose redundant/load-balanced DNS. Or are you talking about your hostmask when you sign into IRC? For example: steve51184!~user@mydomain.com? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-19 18:00 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seranow · 2014-02-20 07:05 Your comment is for 80% irrelevant. He wants to point a DNS entry to an already existing server. Therefore only your second point is on topic and relevant. And about that first point. He won't need his ISP's approval since he's not hosting it, he's changing a dns entry. Generaly speaking the average joe doesn't get a domain and dns records from his ISP but even if he did, the least he could expect to be able to do is to make dns entries to any IP¨he desires.
