FreeNODE IRC Servers Offline reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- plentyofenergy · 2014-02-03 03:05 I am a developer and stay logged into IRC to assist in the projects I am familiar with. Today near 6PM GMT -7 I lost connection. Normally this would not be a big deal. I messaged a friend via SMS and he too said that he could not connect to freenode. Is anyone else seeing issues connection to freenode or is this just isolated? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pwarren · 2014-02-03 03:09 Can connect via IPv6 fine, but there's almost no-one in the channels. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MillenniumFalc0n · 2014-02-03 03:10 Yes, there have been multiple netsplits over the last few hours. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-03 03:52 freenode is currently being attacked. I'm still signed in there. I believe it was a synflood earlier and now is a dns reflection attack. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cos · 2014-02-03 04:01 A few hours ago there was a *lot* of netsplitting. Just now, there's a lot of lag. Sometimes minutes-long lag. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KZISME · 2014-02-03 04:33 I can't even connect I thought it was my connection at first. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wmcscrooge · 2014-02-03 05:53 I still can't connect now, however the webchat for freenode is still up in case you need to get on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_am_Minthe · 2014-02-03 06:09 I found I had to connect to the European servers, specifically the UK one in manchester. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-03 12:40 Glad webcast still works ---------------------------------------------------------------------- clinchgt · 2014-02-03 15:08 > a dns reflection attack This is wrong and it was well-known since yesterday that it was done on purpose to reduce the load from the DDoS attacks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- plentyofenergy · 2014-02-03 16:55 Are there any official sources for news on this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cos · 2014-02-03 19:27 Huh? What makes you say that the DDoS attacks in question weren't DNS reflection attacks? I presume that by "it was done on purpose" you're referring to putting 127.0.0.1 A records in for chat.freenode.net, but that could certainly have been part of a defense to a DNS reflection attack, as it could have been part of a defense to some other attack. I'm not saying I know for sure that freenode has been getting attacked by DNS reflection, but I don't understand how your comment makes sense or why you're claiming it wasn't the case. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cos · 2014-02-03 19:29 Did you miss my [more recent post to this same sub](http://www.reddit. com/r/irc/comments/1ww121/freenode_irc_status_update_about_the_current _ddos/)? Since your comment came several hours after I made that post, I'm not sure if you missed it or if you did see it and mean some other source besides that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- plentyofenergy · 2014-02-03 21:57 Sorry I didn't find any reference to the outage when I searched reddit. I did miss it. Thanks for the link!
