How do I use BNC bouncer to hide my IP? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnotherSmegHead · 2014-01-29 09:44 I've been dinking around with BNC but I cannot seem to figure out how to use it properly. I might just go back to using an old shell instead. Whats the easiest way to cloak an IP on IRC? I'm using X-Chat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnotherSmegHead · 2014-01-29 11:52 Why are people downvoting this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_am_Minthe · 2014-01-29 12:14 the easiest way for me to cloak my IP is using sh3lls.net and paying them 2 dollars a month and having them set up it all. If you rent a vps, then just install ZNC which is pretty easy, have to make a notepad .bat file for the setup, but if you connect into your vps through your irc client then you are golden. Message me and I can try to help you out holmes. Also some networks have a channel with companies offering a free bouncer you can dial into... And some networks offer free cloaking. I'm assuming you are on a network with neither ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I_am_Minthe · 2014-01-29 12:15 Cuz ppl suck ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Helzibah · 2014-01-29 12:24 What networks are you connecting to? Most networks offer boring/unaffiliated cloaking (`~Helzibah@unaffiliated/helzibah`) for free in the correct channel (`#freenode` on freenode [for example](http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#cloaks)), just wander in and ask. Just make sure you [set your client up correctly](http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#nocloakonjoin) so it [auths you to NickServ as you join](http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#nicksetup) rather than afterwards. Otherwise you'll join with your IP and be seen to quit and re-join changing to your cloak which a) defeats the point and b) is annoying join spam. (The advice here works for freenode, but you should be able to adapt fine for other networks or find a staffer to ask.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-01-29 14:57 I recommend ZNC, it's a new-age bouncer that support multiple networks\users from one install. I use [SpexHost for my shell provider.](www.spexhost.com) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 0root · 2014-01-29 16:40 I use a bouncer. You have to set it up correctly so your IP is masked by your bouncer instead. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- phate408 · 2014-01-29 20:47 Because BNCs are from the 90's when people had dial up and should have gone the way of dialup by now. There's also not much of a point to hiding your IP. The only thing that could come from it could be someone attempting to DoS your connection. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- webvictim · 2014-01-29 23:28 Bouncers still serve a perfectly relevant purpose. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- frumious · 2014-01-30 03:11 There is a lot more to ZNC than hiding your IP. Primary is persistent connections and connections from multiple clients. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- phate408 · 2014-01-30 04:19 I'll acknowledge the use for connecting from multiple clients but the need for persistent connections went away with the proliferation of services. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FiXato · 2014-01-30 04:28 Including the protocol (http://) with your URL should fix your link markup for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FiXato · 2014-01-30 04:33 Persistent connections are still useful for logging purposes and allowing people to leave (multiple) messages for you without having to rely on limited MemoServ services.
