Really stupid question, don't upvote reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- speculatius · 2014-01-22 00:14 I'm kinda new to IRC (used it about 10 years ago for a very short time, but totally forgot about everything) and I can't seem to join 2 channels at different servers at the same time, is that normal? I'm using miranda if that is relevant (because I used it back then, and because it also runs jabber). I tried to google it, but (probably because the question is too basic) didn't come up with anything, and it was not covered in any tutorials I read... Thanks in advance! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lindsayadult · 2014-01-22 00:31 you need to set up and connect to one server, then join the appropriate channel on that server. then do the same thing AGAIN with the second server/chan. it's likely that you're trying to do both at once or something silly like that. best of luck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- speculatius · 2014-01-22 00:55 Thanks for the reply, I thought that was what I was doing... I connected to freenode, joined #digitalcoin and a number of other channels. Then I connected to quakenet, joined 2 or three of the biggest channels there, but the process of connecting to another server closed all my chat windows, and when I rejoined the channels (for example #digitalcoin), I suddenly was the only user there... Now I'm back to freenode, and have my old channels back, full of users, but of course now I am the only member in some channels that were filled with users on quakenet. Maybe miranda doesn't support connecting to two different servers at the same time? I'll do some more testing tomorrow, as it's getting kinda late in my timezone, but again thanks for your reply. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sennacheribbo · 2014-01-22 01:31 i don't know how it works in miranda but when you connect to a second server on mIRC/irssi you need to use /server -m irc.quakenet.net for example, -m, so that will run a new server on another window ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kellyzdude · 2014-01-22 11:04 This is a very client-specific problem, so you'll need to consult the Miranda docs to figure it out. I found http://miranda.wikia.com/wiki/Multiple_Accounts which may help, but I'm not a Miranda user so it's offered as-is based on a quick Google. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- speculatius · 2014-01-22 12:32 Thanks a lot, that worked! I still wasn't able to connect to irc.foonetic.net (wanted to see the xkcd chats), but I am now successfully online on freenode and quakenet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-01-22 13:56 hexchat / xchat ftw ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- farded · 2014-01-22 15:36 What you're doing is changing the current server from freenode to quakenet, and then it tries to use your freenode channels on the wrong server (quakenet). I don't know how miranda works, but you should be able to use the /connect command to connect to servers while keeping the other ones. Something like this should work: /connect irc.freenode.net /join #reddit,#nethack,#linux /connect irc.quakenet.net /join #channel,#neverbeenhere,#gamesorwhat ---------------------------------------------------------------------- speculatius · 2014-01-22 17:06 Thanks, but it seems like miranda doesn't have a command window for using such commands. Instead I believe that the only way to connect to channels and servers is through their GUI, and they do the connecting for you. I always got >Permission denied - You are not an IRC operator whenever I tried it, in channels as well as in the server window (and miranda doesn't show me any other windows to type in). I have gotten it to work as described in the miranda-wiki, by creating a second account (just writing all this up in case someone has the same problem). You just have to copy the IRC.dll in the plugins folder, and then create another IRC account with that new dll. ATM I am on freenode and quakenet at the same time. But I still can't connect to irc.foonetic.net, probably because that's not in the list of servers that miranda has. It let's me type my own servers in there, too, but it won't connect if I do that... So I guess I'll stick to freenode till I have a bit more time to experiment with it and find a solution, as playing around with IRC (and lurking in all kinds of altcoin channels) has already cost me quite some time that I should have spent on an assignment for uni ;-) But thanks again for your help!
