What is the Best Freesoftware IRC? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IcyAsian · 2014-01-07 04:24 Looking for a free software of IRC that is awesome and easy to use for now. If they got themes too that would be wicked. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wmcscrooge · 2014-01-07 04:41 There are four open source IRC's that I can think of that are really good. **Web Clients** 1. KiwiIRC 1. Tiny Tiny IRC **CLI Clients** 1. irssi 1. Weechat Of the two sections, I prefer KiwiIRC and Weechat. weechat and irssi is customizable in the colors, though there is a definite learning curve (weechat is easier and better, I think). KiwiIRC is easy to set up, but Tiny Tiny IRC has themes. The Web clients need to be hosted by you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jojotdfb · 2014-01-07 04:49 Just spend some time learning irssi. Combine that with tmux or screen on a server somewhere you can ssh into and you're good to go. You could run this on a tiny ec2 instance and never have to worry about not being on irc. I may have an addictive personality so take my advice with a grain of salt. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Katana__ · 2014-01-07 05:05 kvirc is also worth mentioning. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Denommus · 2014-01-07 12:14 My favorite is ERC, but it only makes sense if you are an Emacs user. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-01-07 13:00 I just want to pimp HexChat. But many people will steer you to their own personal choices. For me, that's HexChat. I didn't like irssi or weechat (or mIRC or a bunch of others)... that's the client side. If you're intending to run a server, Charybdis with Atheme is a good choice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ctrlx0 · 2014-01-07 16:58 Payed IRC clients exist? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IcyAsian · 2014-01-07 18:00 Yeah, I landed on an IRC site, said I had to pay $20 for it. No thanks to that one... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Spore2012 · 2014-01-08 11:50 I just use chatzilla addon for firefox. It's convenient ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tananar · 2014-01-09 00:19 I use Weechat nowadays, but Hexchat is probably best for most people. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- urda · 2014-01-10 00:26 +1 to irssi I've really enjoyed having that on my linux box after being introduced to it! Don't froget to setup hilight on it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- happosade · 2014-01-26 19:21 Another +1 to irssi. Have been using it ~always, somewhat 10 years or so. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-01-28 00:43 Meh Charybdis and Atheme. Ever thought of InspIRCd and Anope? :P ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-01-28 20:00 InspIRCd is broken (memory leaks especially) and Anope is just ... bad software. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-01-30 20:30 InspIRCd is a lot more stable then it used to be and is always being improved. As for Anope...have you tried Anope 2.0? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-01-30 21:42 Yes and I stand by my comment about it. Atheme is simply better software. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-09 04:21 I don't think so. I think Anope 2.0 is better than Atheme in almost everything. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-09 04:27 You'll learn better ... in time. I'll pray for you in the meantime, however. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-10 11:49 I've used Atheme before and it doesn't have the features I need. You don't need to pitty me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-10 18:27 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-11 11:10 Hmm so advanced botserv kick features are annoying eh? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-02-11 12:54 [deleted]
