IRC admins - what do you use for channel logging and display? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- balalaikaboss · 2013-12-29 04:01 Hey all, $job is asking me to build a company-wide IRC server for our Development and Operations teams. I've got it mostly set up with InspirCD + Atheme services (all-SSL, LDAP-backed SASL logins, huzzah!), but one of the requirements is "easy Channel logging and display of past main chatroom conversations". Is there a favorite utility folks tend to use for this? I've tried looking at some bots that do logging (either to text or HTML) to database such as irclog.gr, but they either just plain don't work (hi irclog.gr!) or they're incredibly clunky and awkward (some Rails mess running off a Hubot-alike that dumped to SQL and had a very... awkward web interface; can't even remember the link now...) Ideally, if I could find an easily-replicable setup that looks like what irclogs.wordpress.org has, or even chatlogs.musicbrainz.org, that would be super. If it read the channel logs straight from disk via inspircd (mod_chatlog.so has been great in that regard) that would be ideal. If a bot-to-database/flatfile solution is what's in order, I would downright jump for joy if the bot could connect via SSL/SASL (so I wouldn't have yet-another-one-off-port to firewall, etc). Many thanks in advance for any advice you could offer! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arcalion · 2013-12-29 14:58 We do this at work too. Basically I have an irssi client running screen'd on the same unix server as the irc server itself, on a different account. I join it to the channels that need logging, and it's set up to log (and names the logfiles based on date, as we only retain 2 weeks worth of logs - cron job on a script that deletes older than that). Then I have apache configured to allow a directory listing of the log files if you browse to a certain URL. Simple, if unelegant. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seiyria · 2013-12-29 15:34 What I'm doing right now is building an IRC bot that stores all of the logs in the channels that it's in to a mongoDB database. A web interface for that would be pretty simple. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jjasghar · 2013-12-29 17:06 Hear hear, straightforward and works. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Flight747 · 2014-01-01 00:05 You could also try something like have all the logging done by an eggdrop bot then use http://logs2html.sourceforge.net/ to convert them to html and make it nice and readable. There's an example here http://www.nubae.com/logs/ - though you can of course customise it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sempiterna · 2014-01-05 21:30 I'm not sure if it is what you are looking for, but at chat4all.org, we use a bot that sits in those channels that are required to be logged. This bot outputs logs to disk, one file per channel, per day and is updated in real time. I wrote a front-end for that for easy displaying and searching. I also offer this service for other channels on our network and potentially other networks if they need channel logging. So, this is a hosted solution (using SSL and password protection), but you are probably looking for an in-house solution? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- balalaikaboss · 2014-01-06 05:35 thanks for the tip, but we are definitely looking for an in-house solution. Don't suppose your system is open-sourced, is it? :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sempiterna · 2014-01-06 20:53 No, unfortunately (for various reasons), the system is not open sourced.
