Confused on setting ircd-irc2 (IRC server) on Ubuntu--I'm not sure what SID I'm supposed to use. reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jinnyjuice · 2013-12-22 19:27 Hi there, I've been trying to set an IRC server and it keeps giving me a fatal error, saying that my SID is invalid. I Googled to no avail. I set it to 840A (also tried 8400), because 840 is the US and and A or 0 is the first identifier (or whatever you want to call it). Here is my example line: M:mywebsite.com:City, State:port#:840A: How can I fix this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CannedDeath · 2013-12-22 22:06 Assuming the rules for TS6 SIDs also apply here, it must be exactly 3 characters and the first one must be a number. I would recommend using a more modern ircd like charybdis, ratbox, or inspircd though. ircd2 is ancient. Edit: I think it might actually be an extra colon at the end of your M:line. I'm not completely familiar with the original ircd's configuration file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jinnyjuice · 2013-12-23 00:36 I tried three digit number, but it didn't seem to work. Getting rid of the colon didn't work either. Argh! Maybe I should get rid of ircd-irc2 like you suggested. Which of charybdis, ircd-ratbox, and InspIRCd would you recommend? I just want to set something up easy and fast. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-12-23 00:49 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CannedDeath · 2013-12-23 00:49 I'd say charybdis or inspircd. Inspircd has more features but charybdis has been easier to configure for me and performs a lot better. Plus charybdis is also the basis of freenode's ircd All three ircds i mentioned abandoned the old configuration line syntax used by ircd2 for much easier to use formats ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jinnyjuice · 2013-12-23 02:07 Thanks. Any good guide you'd recommend to follow instructions for installing on Ubuntu? I looked it up, turned out [this](http://laltrom ondo.dynalias.net/~iki/informatica/soft/irc_network) seemed like the only decent guide, but this guide is telling me to install all kinds of things that seems unnecessary. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CannedDeath · 2013-12-23 02:17 Qwebirc is only needed if you want webchat, but you do need a services package like Atheme or Anope if you want stuff like ChanServ and NickServ. I would just read the comments in the example config files (example.conf for charybdis) and the INSTALL or README files. They're usually good enough for figuring out how to configure a network without needing a separate tutorial. I would also recommend compiling the ircd manually instead of using a pre compiled package since that's what most real world networks do. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xnite · 2013-12-23 11:22 Charybdis has much better protections built into the IRCd, and while it may not be "feature rich" it has the ability to configure to choose which servers opers can run commands from & etc. For example if you have a new link, no matter what they change their permissions to in their ircd config, you could make it so the other servers will not accept k:lines from theirs.
