I think Freenode probably has the best technology channels around
right now.  Did you try any of their channels relating to your OS?

I don't like english on freenode and much rather prefer the #English
on efnet . I'm on Rizon  #math and #writing which are great for
english and math help.

There's also ##music. Both places are fairly civil but this one has no
ops a majority of the time.
