Phenny Bot, Regex, and Greater Than ( > )

Shot in the dark here, but I am running an instance of Phenny (python
oriented irc bot) that uses rules in the form of Regex to respond
inline. I am proficient with Regex and have a pattern match that works
with any other character BUT '>' doesn't seem to pull up a match, even
when explicitly referenced in the pattern.

Furthermore, the same pattern catches my text properly when run in
straight python (2.7). Does anyone have any experience with this
matter? I am thinking I am going to have to trudge through the
framework code to investigate at this point because I am coming up
short with all other attempts to resolve the issue. pattern is below
for reference:

    rule = r'^(.*?)(\b>\b)(.*)$'

I'm sorry I don't have any knowledge of the matter, but have you tried
asking elsewhere, perhaps a channel on freenode, or another subreddit
/r/python or something?

/r/python is probably my next try. I may actually try emailing the dev
as his info if floating around on his github.
