irccloud just went out of Beta and they want $5 a month. So im looking for an alternative. reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lord_Zero · 2013-11-13 16:58 I used Quassel for a while but its a bit buggy on windows. I had my core hosted on a VPS so I could connect via SSL anywhere, it was fantastic actually. If weechat had a usable web interface id be ecstatic. So are there any other options? I want a good cloud based client. I know I can use weechat in a screen but I find it difficult switching between channels and servers to see who is talking to me. Maybe you guys have tips on that too? EDIT: Going for [weecloud] (https://github.com/eirikb/weecloud) and weechat on the same VPS right now while I wait to see what the kiwi guys have in store. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MillenniumFalc0n · 2013-11-13 17:07 Have you considered using a bouncer like ZNC? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lord_Zero · 2013-11-13 17:27 How does this work? Wont I still need some type of client? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MillenniumFalc0n · 2013-11-13 17:50 You will need to connect to it with a client yes. ZNC is a bouncer, you set it up on a server and it stays connected to your irc networks. Instead of connecting directly to an irc server, you would connect to your.server.com on whatever port you assigned znc to. In the server password field you put zncusername/networkname:zncpassword. You get to choose how many lines of backscroll you want it to send you per channel. You can find more information [here](http://wiki.znc.in/ZNC) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2013-11-13 18:09 Yes, unfortunately. There are no decent FOSS alternatives to IRCcloud currently. They are not difficult to make, but no one has made one ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lord_Zero · 2013-11-13 18:12 Hey Paradox! I havent seen you around in a good while. Anyways, I think the IRC world would benefit immensely for a Quassel style IRC web client. Just install it on your local server, and navigate to IP:PORT. done. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2013-11-13 18:16 Are you referring to one for snoonet? We have webchat, which isn't ideal. Additionally, we're investigating possible income pathways, such as hosted quassel cores or similar. We'll keep you updated ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lord_Zero · 2013-11-13 18:19 so its essentially like the Core of Quassel? I have some questions I couldnt find there * Does it log channel chatter to? If so is it configurable? SQLite, PSSQL, ect * Does the client you have need to have ZNC support? You mention that you tell the client to connect to the server and port ZNC is running on. This confuses me: > For each IRC network, you need to create a ZNC user. > Each ZNC user can connect to several IRC networks, though you'll need to connect your IRC client to ZNC several times. So why create a different ZNC user per network if one ZNC user can connect to multiple networks? Also, now I have to remeber a ZNC user on each network, AND my nickserv username/password? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lord_Zero · 2013-11-13 18:23 Yes please put me on the proverbial mailing list. But no I was more talking about something like this: An irccloud server you install yourself. So imagine installing quassel**Core** on a VPS but instead of needing the Quassel Client it sets up a web interface for you. No desktop client needed. Why this doesnt exist yet is beyond me ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2013-11-13 18:25 Like i said, making an IRC client is simple. You can do one in about 100 lines of ruby. Couple Sinatra+Cinch, use either websockets or server-side-events, and you've got a chatbot. Throw a database on there to manage things like ignores and channel joins, and you've got an irccloud ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lord_Zero · 2013-11-13 18:28 Unfortunately im still very new with web design. I have a C# WinForms background and I just started working for a company doing ASP.NET. I lack in the areas of Javascript and things like Ruby. But it might be a good project to start for learning all this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MillenniumFalc0n · 2013-11-13 18:40 >so its essentially like the Core of Quassel? Sort of. There are benefits and drawbacks to using znc vs quassel. The main benefit is that you can connect to it from practically any irc client. The main drawback is that you don't have the level of integration of a quassel client+core. For instance, you can't dynamically fetch more scrollback when you scroll all the way through the default number of lines it buffers for you. >Does it log channel chatter to? If so is it configurable? SQLite, PSSQL, ect Yes, you can set up logging on a per-user or per-network basis. I haven't investigated format options. By default it logs to .log text files with a naming format of networkname_#channelname_date.log >Does the client you have need to have ZNC support? You mention that you tell the client to connect to the server and port ZNC is running on. No. You just put the server your znc is hosted on in the server address field and the corresponding port in the port field. That's all you *have* to do. Then you would need to do /quote pass zncusername:zncpassword. If your client has a server password field you can skip that step by putting znc info in that field. ZNC also has an sasl module if you would prefer to authenticate with it that way. If you choose to use znc with ssl your client would need to support that of course. >This confuses me: >>For each IRC network, you need to create a ZNC user. The passage you quoted is for older versions of ZNC. If you use ZNC 1.0 you don't need a separate user for each network. You create one user and add multiple networks to it. This is easily managed through znc's webadmin module. You only need to remember one znc username and pass. Let's say you create a user named Zero and have two networks, snoonet and freenode. Your server is lord.zero.net and the port znc is on is 6000. Your password is hunter2. To connect to freenode you would put lord.zero.net in the server address field, 6000 as the port, and in the server password field you would put Zero/freenode:hunter2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lord_Zero · 2013-11-13 18:47 oh i get it now. So would this be doable through clients like mibbit then? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MillenniumFalc0n · 2013-11-13 18:50 yes, you should be able to use mibbit to connect to it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- prawnsalad · 2013-11-13 20:16 kiwi IRC developer here - we have something coming up very soon in this area. And as always, open source so you will be free to download and run it on your own server if you did not want to use the hosted version. Keep an eye on irc.freenode.net #kiwiirc, or @kiwiirc on twitter for when we make the announcement :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lord_Zero · 2013-11-13 20:21 Thanks for taking the time to reply to me. I was just over at kiwiirc and I saw a "beta" button. Is that was it was about? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sithmaul · 2013-11-14 12:13 Have your tried https://ircanywhere.com/ ? You can install it on your own server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lord_Zero · 2013-11-14 16:28 This is exactly what I want. They need to have better keywords because I searched hard for this. EDIT: After further consideration the project seems wobbly and very difficult to install. I'm going to wait for Kiwiirc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- knuxgen · 2013-12-05 20:47 Well if anyone wants an invite anyway, let me know. I still have some. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rickibalboa · 2013-12-10 21:47 I'm the lead developer for this and at the moment it is unfortunately a bit unstable. It's undergoing a lot of redevelopment work, expect a basic version in a couple of month with persistent clients and backlogs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lord_Zero · 2013-12-10 23:59 Awesome! I very much look forward to see that basic version. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cheapshot · 2014-02-04 03:35 Sorry for necro-ing this. I've managed to set this up in Adium with only limited success. following your description above, i made two log in accounts: * User: Zero Pass: Zero/freenode:hunter2 * User: Zero Pass: Zero/snoonet:hunter2 However, when I make one of these, it kicks the other one offline. I.e. I cannot connect to them BOTH at the same time. Is this normal? Anyway around it? Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hiught · 2014-03-15 08:24 IRCAnywhere is an application written in javascript which is designed to be a free alternative to IRCCloud.
