Hi r/IRC, how many of you use mIRC and what do you use IRC for? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jovial_Jones · 2013-11-13 21:56 just that. Cheers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OverdoseDelusion · 2013-11-13 21:58 I still use mIRC for various things. mostly talking to buddies on the chans or for fellow eve players' channels ---------------------------------------------------------------------- marcusbro · 2013-11-13 22:05 I use the weechat IRC client and I use IRC to help one another ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MachaHack · 2013-11-13 22:24 I don't use mIRC because the UI is a disaster. Personally I use Hexchat and Andchat. Mostly use it for gaming (esp. Minecraft) and programming channels. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- farded · 2013-11-13 22:33 not mIRC and media/idling ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wmcscrooge · 2013-11-13 23:01 I don't use mIRC, I prefer irssi. It's more minimal (I feel) and I prefer cli clients. I use irc either for projects (bots, games), for personal channels (with irl friends, relatives), for help (with open- source/linux projects) or for subreddits (mostly just /r/progether cause it can be faster to type and communicate ideas there then to make a whole post) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jovial_Jones · 2013-11-14 03:12 Interesting, I'm not familiar with cli clients, could you give me some pointers to where to start learning about cli clients? Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jovial_Jones · 2013-11-14 03:15 Nice, I used mIRC in the past, I liked it, mostly because of its internal programming language. I think that was the first prog language I learned. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jovial_Jones · 2013-11-14 03:16 Nice, so what do you like instead mIRC? and why not mIRC? Cheers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jovial_Jones · 2013-11-14 03:25 Do you use IRC for professional purposes? I mean, do you use it at work and stuff? or what kind of help is the one you do? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jovial_Jones · 2013-11-14 03:28 Thanks. Is there anything you believe regular internet fellas should use IRC for? Something that would work better through IRC than through any other protocol? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- marcusbro · 2013-11-14 03:48 I do not use IRC for professional purposes but a lot of people do. I help on linux distro channels. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wmcscrooge · 2013-11-14 04:57 hmm, really when I think of cli clients, the most popular and arguable best IS irssi. So the only links i think are the best are ones to do with irssi. Such as [the arch wiki](https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/irssi), the [actual documentation](http://irssi.org/documentation), and [quadpoint's tutorial](http://quadpoint.org/articles/irssi/). However, point to be noted is that cli clients are more geared towards linux (or osx). Although apparently [there is a port to windows](http://irssi.org/download). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- farded · 2013-11-14 06:51 I'm using irssi because I'm a nerd for terminal apps and I dont know of a native mIRC for Debian. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LordGarak · 2013-11-14 07:42 I haven't used mIRC in over a decade. I just realized I've been using IRC for nearly two decades. I started when I was 11, I'm 30 now. I started out with WSIRC(I think) that came on my ISP's setup disk. I had no idea what it was I just opened it up and started playing with it. I met a few people early on who lead me to installing an early version of mIRC. Scripting was pretty simple at that point, I don't even this mIRC had control statements like if at that point. I wrote a number of scripts and bots into it before moving to linux. My only previous programming experience was QBasic. IRC took off in my hometown about a year after I started. It was the center of most social activities at my high school. Many parties were planned and advertised on #cube. That channel at any given time had over 100 kids from my highschool(of about 700 students) on it. I also joined #leftsock which had the younger crowd on it. IRC was the best part of high school for me. IRC died completely about a year or so after I graduated. MSN messenger got big for a few years, then facebook came along.... These days I usually go on IRC for niche interest like amateur radio and robotics. There are a few interesting communities on freenode. IRC had just the right barrier of entry at this point to keep the masses out. I think I've used mIRC once in the past few years. Mostly I just use irssi running on a screen session on a linux box at work. That way I can jump on from any computer/device with an ssh client yet it appears I'm always connected. Its great to be able to change computers without interrupting the conversation. I can also jump on from my android phone from where ever. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Japex · 2013-11-14 11:25 Why would I use that insecure piece of a crap when I can stick with the glorious ircii master race!? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bllgvn · 2013-11-14 11:49 for myself I use Hexchat, I've never used mIRC personally but I will tend to sit in support communities and offer assistance in any way I can. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FiXato · 2013-11-14 14:40 I'm quite fond of [WeeChat](http://www.weechat.org) myself, which has support for various scripting languages including Perl, Python, Ruby, Lua, Scheme, TCL and perhaps some more by now through plugins. My own [Guide to WeeChat](http://fixato.org/guides/setting_up_weechat.html) runs through a bunch of various settings and helps with configuring your terminal and shell to get the most out of WeeChat. Pascal Poitras aka r3m also has [a bunch of interesting blog posts about WeeChat](http://pascalpoitras.com/tag/weechat/), such as [his favourite scripts](http://pascalpoitras.com/2013/06/29/weechat-my- favorites-scripts/) and [his WeeChat config](http://pascalpoitras.com/2013/05/25/my-weechat- configuration/). The [official WeeChat documentation](http://weechat.org/doc/stable/) such as the [F.A.Q.](http://weechat.org/files/doc/weechat_faq.en.html), [Quickstart Guide](http://weechat.org/files/doc/stable/weechat_quickst art.en.html), [Manual](http://weechat.org/files/doc/stable/weechat_user.en.html) and [Plugin API Reference](http://weechat.org/files/doc/stable/weechat_plu gin_api.en.html) and [Scripting Guide](http://weechat.org/files/doc/stable/weechat_scripting.en.html) are very handy to get you up and running too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FiXato · 2013-11-14 14:43 I use it quite a bit for error reporting / monitoring. I have a couple of custom bots that will report errors that might occur in some Ruby projects I have, as well as updating me about new RSS feeds from various Norwegian newspapers as they come in. I also had one at some point that would report the latest commits and bugreports on a SourceForge project, but due to SF's changes, I need to update it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aperson · 2013-11-14 15:47 Most clients allow you to write scripts in whatever language you want nowadays. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- poo706 · 2013-11-14 17:38 I use irssi on Linux and download TV shows mostly, occasionally music, and movies on rare occasions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rOOb85 · 2013-11-14 19:42 I use mirc on windows, xchat on linux desktop, and weechat on my servers. I mainly use irc to chat with online friends and learn programming. I started using irc to download warez when I was young...and discovered its a great way to learn as there is always someone smarter then you who can help you learn. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jovial_Jones · 2013-11-16 01:02 Cool. I need to update myself on these grounds, the last time I used IRC was on 2010, and before that, it was looong ago. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jovial_Jones · 2013-11-16 01:02 Thanks for answering! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jovial_Jones · 2013-11-16 01:02 Thanks, appreciated! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wmcscrooge · 2013-11-16 01:14 not a problem at all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jovial_Jones · 2013-11-16 01:19 Cool! I kind of relate to that, started messing around with mIRC at similar age, that's when learned about if-then-else, variables, alias, and other basic stuff. Also I remember kind of a social scene happening there. There were many parties (to which I rarely went) thrown in my town that were being announced through IRC, so yeah, and to be honest, I remember the channels I frequented were always full of awkward, shy druggies, people looking for illegal stuff, and social misfits (like your buddy here (clarifying: me)). I remember MSN messenger growth and then FB as well. I don't know, I really miss the IRC days. I learned a lot of stuff about computers and people, and networks... It was a whole new world to me at that age. Thanks for replying. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jovial_Jones · 2013-11-16 01:20 I'm checking out ircii and irssi right away. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jovial_Jones · 2013-11-16 01:20 Thanks. Out of curiosity, are you a developer? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jovial_Jones · 2013-11-16 01:21 Thanks. Does it work better than torrents or download clients? speed, availability, variety, safety? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jovial_Jones · 2013-11-16 01:23 Yeah, I think the same, it's a whole big place, quite nice to learn about a lot of stuff! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- poo706 · 2013-11-16 18:07 Searching and downloading is a bit more hands on, but no big deal after you do it a few times. Speeds are hella fast at non-peak times, you could encounter queues and slow speeds at peak times. Pretty much anything you could want is available. Although, new stuff pushes out old stuff generally within a few months. I feel that is pretty damn safe if you stick to the big, well established networks. Especially because you're strictly downloading, not uploading like torrents. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jovial_Jones · 2013-11-16 20:23 Yeah, little more hands on, but it's worth the learning! Appreciated, thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-11-19 04:29 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grehelpneeded · 2013-11-21 19:27 I like hexchat, but my issue is that whenever I tab-select someone's name, it adds a comma. So if I tab to MachaHack at the start of a line, it becomes "MachaHack," which is super annoying and often grammatically incorrect. I can't figure out how to disable it, either. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MachaHack · 2013-11-21 20:40 I configured that to change it to a colon instead of a comma back when I used X-Chat iirc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grehelpneeded · 2013-11-21 20:41 I was able to do the same in x-chat, but I just can't figure out how to do it in hexchat. I don't know why! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MachaHack · 2013-11-21 22:42 Maybe the GUI option is gone? I just renamed my conf file ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vaibe · 2013-11-22 12:47 For years I've used X-Chat and X-Chat2, I just found HexChat earlier today and I love it. Looks waaay better. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dear-reader · 2013-11-24 00:22 http://i.imgur.com/Rob0UKP.png ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grehelpneeded · 2013-11-25 14:07 I love you, man. I don't know how I didn't see that. It's been driving me absolutely crazy. Also, I happened to do a bit more searching today and the solution is also available as: /set completion_suffix (word here) Problem with my method is I can't figure out what "blank" would be. I'm using a space, but it results in "(Name)[space][space]." So, thank you for the quick fix! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-11-29 08:30 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- plaice · 2013-11-29 09:43 I was one of the first kids in my school to install it. This led to me (at 12) being a part of the team managing my school's channels, website and several random forums. Parties were organized, bands/teams formed, people fell in love and stuff. I started to use IRC again a few days ago, trying out HexChat for interests and just to see if the old channels I used to frequent are still there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- damn_shameless · 2013-12-16 13:57 o/ I joined IRC about two years ago and I've been using mIRC since. I am curious to try and other Operating Systems other than Windows but I just cannot give up on mIRC. I have tried and other clients, but no - can not get used with them. What I use IRC for? Well, good question. I find it educative. I only knew 'hi' in English when I joined IRC. I am still bad at it but by just learning it on IRC I am fine. :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HavokOC · 2014-01-02 01:25 I don't use mIRC, but it's a great client. I use Irssi myself, as it gives me the terminal feeling while chatting. I use IRC for helping people in support channels and just general chatting. You can find me on Esper as havokoc :)
