Setting up a BNC/proxy to connect to from anywhere? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rkos · 2013-11-06 10:45 Hi, is it possible to set up an IRC connection on my home computer so that I can connect to it from elsewhere. This should be possible in irssi/putty at least? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-11-06 11:13 The traditional way would be to run `openssh` on your home computer, together with a `screen` session running `irssi`. Then you need to forward port 22, so you can access your home computer via your router's public ip. Then you'll want to use a service like `noip` to give you a reliable address to connect to; one that's not dependent on whatever ip your ISP dynamically assigns you. It's more work that it's worth, running a bouncer on a home PC that runs Windows. Pick up a $15/year Linux VPS from http://lowendbox.com, or use irccloud or some other service. ZNC is also probably less painful than irssi, as it will allow you to use native applications on your client devices. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rkos · 2013-11-06 11:25 Thanks, I'll look into some VPS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthaneezy · 2013-11-06 16:56 [Up front I want to say that I'm going to include a link that will give me $10.] Anyways, I run 2 websites and have another VPS just for IRC. $5/month. https://www.digitalocean.com/?refcode=55706cc38df6 I used to run a Raspberry Pi at home but the MicroSD memory cards kept getting corrupted. I'm assuming it had to do with me constantly re- writing to the SD card. The VPS solution is much easier. No networking involved, no port forwarding, always on, and so much faster than your home connection. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- suudo · 2013-11-08 10:42 [IRCCloud](https://irccloud.com) is a BNC in your browser. It uses HTML5, so it isn't supported by older browsers, but there's a smartphone app. If you're interested, PM me your email address and I'll shoot you an invite so you can try it out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rkos · 2013-11-08 11:52 Thanks it sounds interesting but if it requires the newest browsers its fairly limited to me since I dont have a smartphone, also after the beta Im not really willing to pay 5 a month for a BNC that I wont be using all the time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glomph · 2013-11-11 01:14 They recently kind of nurfed their free accounts though. But I guess if you didn't already have a VPS they might be a good deal. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- suudo · 2013-11-11 03:52 I did already have a VPS for a BNC (and then irssi when I was annoyed at missing messages), but it was $4 a month. IRCCloud is $5 a month, it's more reliable than that VPS so far, the guys who run it are friendly, and it uses a decent web client. They never had free accounts anyway, they were in beta for three years. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glomph · 2013-11-11 12:40 Fair enough. I am always going to want/need to have a vps around so for me the cost of running a ZNC instance is kind of zero. Glad they have some end users, it just turns out I am not one of them.
