IRC from mac address? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- r0nniePwnz · 2013-10-22 23:19 I see users on efnet using what appaers to be their MAC address instead of their hostname/ip on EFnet. I was wondering how do they do this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CapnSupermarket · 2013-10-22 23:53 IPv6 address, maybe? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rrriot · 2013-10-23 15:45 It's probably a [server-provided vhost](http://superuser.com/questions/160718/how-does-hostname- spoofing-customization-work-on-irc-networks). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- r0nniePwnz · 2013-10-23 23:43 No, it's not a vhost.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FiXato · 2013-10-25 18:11 If you mean something like *@2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334, then that is indeed an [IPv6 address](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6_address) as /u/CapnSupermarket pointed out. IPv6 is the next generation of IP addresses to which Internet Service Providers (ISP) are slooooowly migrating to since the available IPv4 ranges have been running out for years. Like MAC-addresses, they use hexadecimal numbering (0-9, A-F).
